𝐅𝐮𝐫𝐳𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐧𝐮𝐭

We’ve not posted for a few months but we have been busy creating some new contemporary lights. This one is a Furzey Island Globe in a gorgeous piece of Dorset-grown Walnut, featuring some rather special figuring. To add character it’s been turned with the end grain running side to side, it normally runs top to bottom.

This globe light is designed to be a nursery light or bedside light for the elderly. It features a warm white, dimmable, low voltage multi-chip LED and 150mm, acrylic, matt-finish globe. This combination gives a lovely soft glow. Being 12v it can also be used in a caravan or boat running off batteries and the acrylic globe is shatterproof for extra safety. It comes complete with rotary dimmer, plug-top power supply, globe and G9 450lm LED bulb.

𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐎𝐚𝐤
The recent change in the weather to cooler and damper conditions makes wood finishes using oils and waxes much trickier. But we were very pleased with the way these Drove Islands turned out so we thought we’d share them with you. The clean and simple lines with hidden bulb holder has proved very popular since we started making this style. The locally sourced Oak used for the lights shown here has some particularly nice grain features.
We think they have a contemporary vibe so we’ve used our round, kiwi-green fabric cord and they work well with a visually striking bulb, like the led cluster shown here.

𝐈𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫?
Hello everyone, Luna here again, I bet you thought I’d forgotten about you. It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable summer for me, I hope you’ve had a good one. In fact that’s the main reason I’ve not posted for some time. The weather has been fabulous with long warm days, still nights and very little of the wet stuff to dampen my fur. Personally I’m not a huge fan of rain as it makes me go frizzy and I have to spend hours straightening and drying things out.
But I love the garden room the staff built for me. It allows me to be outside in the fresh air and I can also be sneaky and keep an eye on the wildlife. Although some air conditioning might be a useful addition as it can get a bit too warm in the afternoons. I’ll have a word.
I’m slightly embarrassed about these pics as I’m not looking my best. These were taken on a particularly warm day and it was as much as I could do to get my head off of the cushion. Plus I’d only had 6 hours sleep, that’s barely a catnap!
Anyway, autumn’s here now and things are already starting to cool down. Soon the garden room will be a memory and I’ll migrate back to the house to relax my 15 Tog, duck-down duvet. Well, one needs a little luxury in one’s life. As I write this dark clouds are gathering again and thundery showers have been forecast. It looks like serious rain is on the way so I’m off, did I mention I don’t like rain?

𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞
You may have noticed from an earlier post that the Stock Gaylard Oak Fair is almost upon us, in fact this coming weekend, the 23rd and 24th August (check out https://www.theoakfair.com/). But a rather lovely piece of English Walnut was calling to me from the workshop and we just managed to complete it in time.

This Headland Peveril is from a Dorset-grown tree and features some beautiful grain patterns and heartwood colour variations. The elevated bulb holder and large square base makes this a fabulous statement light and ideal for a lounge or hallway. To complete the sophisticated vibe we've used our twisted, black fabric cord, nickel plated fittings and a black plug and switch. We hope you like it.

𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚

We’ve been meaning to introduce this new style for a while, but up to now it’s been difficult to source the right timber. Fortunately, our friend Sam at Zephyr Sawmills (https://zephyrsawmills.co.uk/) in North Dorset came to our rescue and we’ve been able to complete our first Headlands, just in time for the Oak Fair.

This first one is the Peveril, in a rather lovely and substantial block of Sequoia. This Giant Redwood grew in Dorset but sadly met it’s demise in a storm. It’s got an intriguing knot in the top face which extends through one corner and we think it adds real character to the light. It’s a statement piece, standing just over 370mm tall with a footprint of 140mm by 90mm. For a slightly retro vibe we’ve fitted it with a polished chrome E27 bulb holder on a stem, with our dark grey, twisted fabric cord and black plug and switch.

We’ve got some locally grown Oak and Walnut waiting, so hopefully we’ll be able to add one or two more for the show in a couple of weeks’ time.

𝐙𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞?
Things have conspired to keep me out of the workshop recently but at last I’ve found some time to turn more wood into sawdust!

If you’re a regular viewer you’ll know that we mainly use native hardwoods from local sawmills, but just occasionally we like to go wild and use exotic hardwoods from around the world. Hopefully they still fit in with our maritime and boat building ethos as even these well-travelled and expensive timbers get used for boat interior joinery. And why wouldn’t you, they’re beautiful to look at!

So with that in mind we turned another ‘Tyne-style’ light base and made this one in Zebrano or Zebrawood, one of my favourite African hardwoods. It turns nicely and finishes very well using oils and waxes.

To continue the retro vibe we’ve used chrome spacers and bulb holder together with our ivory, vintage style, twisted fabric cord. We think it makes quite a striking statement but what do you think?

𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐞
We’ve featured quite a lot of lights recently, and the occasional post from Luna, our Bengal Tabby and QA Chief, but you may not be so familiar with our lampshades. So here is a small selection of shades that we make to complement our bases. These are all made from hand printed or handmade papers using natural materials like plant fibres, petals and leaves. The natural variations in texture and colour add to their uniqueness and beauty but it does mean that no two shades are identical. We like to think they complement the bases rather well. But what do you think?
The papers shown include a Himalayan ivory lokta fibre with orange petals, a blue-grey batik with white dots, a Lloyd blue hand-printed design on mulberry fibre paper and the cats motif is hand-printed from blocks made by mid-century designer Peggy Angus.

𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧
It’s been a little while since we made these tall Oak ‘Needles’ as sourcing timber of the right size and quality has taken a while. Fortunately, Sam at Zephyr Sawmills (zephyrsawmills.co.uk) came up with some rather nice pieces from a North Dorset estate tree, so they have local history. They stand just over half a metre tall and we think make quite an elegant statement, particularly when displayed as a pair. They’ll be perfect as statement lights in a hallway or lounge.

𝑨 𝒃𝒊𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒎
If it’s not too late, a Happy New Year to you all. To contrast completely with the retro look of the Tyne light we posted just before Christmas I thought you might like to see what a piece of weathered Yew looks like after 10 years of exposure to the elements. We love the rustic charm of these pieces and it seems that you do too as we’ve found new homes for quite a few. And now we’re running out of timber from this tree.
