Six works acquired from the studio of French artist André Castinel (1934-2021) - painter, sculptor and occasional illusionist. Castinel studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris from 1958 until 1966 under the teaching of Roger Limouse who was a founder of the group ‘Painters of Poetic Reality’. Castinel’s work is deliberately simplified, adopting tone on nuanced tone and negative space. Characters, landscapes and figures (mainly women) were a source of inspiration despite the abruptness of the portrayal - as seen here in ‘Les Acrobates’ and ‘Les Contorsionistes’. Circus performers being a favourite subject.
