🚪 One wide patio recess, two vertical blinds.

The door and the fixed pane beside it each have their own blind. Draw the door side back to get out to the garden and the other one can stay shut against the sun. With both closed, the vanes line up and from inside it looks like one run of fabric.

The fabric is a soft cream with a fine texture, so the room still gets daylight. We make our verticals here in Bury St Edmunds.

🏡 In a show home every window has to look finished, because people are deciding on a whole house as they walk round it.

These are white fauxwood venetians with cloth tapes, in the bedrooms of a new-build show home. The tapes run down the front of the slats and cover the cord holes, so when the blind is shut you don't get little pinpricks of light coming through.

Fauxwood looks like painted wood but copes with damp far better than the real thing, so it works in pretty much any room.

🌗 Net curtains work in the daytime. Once the lights go on indoors in the evening, anyone outside can see straight through them.

Vision blinds get round that. The fabric runs in two layers, each with solid and sheer stripes. Line the stripes up and you look out through the sheer. Slide them apart and the solid bands cover the gaps, so nobody sees in, but some daylight still gets through.

This one is on a tall hallway window, where a net would look lost. We make Vision blinds ourselves here in Bury St Edmunds.

🛏️ A curved bay is one of the awkward ones to dress. There are no corners to work to, so separate blinds never quite meet.

This one has a single headrail bent to follow the curve, and the vanes run round the bay in one sweep from wall to wall.

The fabric is a white PVC vertical with a faint grey grain. PVC is a blockout fabric, which is why we like it in a bedroom. It also wipes clean with a damp cloth, so there's nothing to take down and wash.

🍂 With the clocks about to go back, Romans are what a lot of people start asking us about.

These are in the bedrooms of one house, fitted inside each recess. The fabric is a soft grey with a trailing leaf pattern, which sits quietly against taupe walls.

Pulled up, they stack into neat folds at the top and leave the whole window clear. Let them down in the evening and you have fabric over the glass instead of a cold black square.

🏠 Renting, or got windows that tilt inwards? Drilling into the frame is usually what puts people off.

Perfect Fit gets round that. The frame hooks in behind the beading round the glass, so there are no screws in the window and no holes in the wall. It is fixed to the part that opens, so it tilts and swings with the window, and on a door in use all day there is nothing hanging loose to catch.

When you move out it comes off and there is nothing to fill.

🌙 Roof windows let in more light than any other window in the house. Lovely, right up until you want the room dark.

These are blockout blinds made for Velux windows. Each one sits in its own frame tight to the glass and runs down side channels, so there is no cord, nothing hanging loose, and very little light sneaking round the edges. You can stop them at any height and they stay put, even on the slope.

☀️ Low autumn sun comes in sideways, straight under a conservatory roof and into your eyes.

Verticals deal with that better than most blinds. Turn the vanes a few degrees and the glare goes but you can still see the garden. Draw them right back when you want the whole view.

These are an oatmeal weave with a faint leaf pattern, all the way round a conservatory with yellow walls. The fabric stays quiet so the yellow can be as loud as it likes.

💼 This one is an office, and the blind had to do two things at once.

Allusion blinds across the patio doors. The vanes are a soft sheer rather than a solid fabric, so closed they still let daylight through and the room does not go gloomy, but nobody crossing the car park can see who is at the desk. Turn them and they open right up like a curtain.

They are hung wide of the door frame so the doors still work with the blind down. Worth getting right on a marked fire exit.

Commercial jobs are a decent slice of what we do. Measured and fitted across Suffolk and Norfolk.

🌑 A blackout blind and a blackout room are not the same thing.

The fabric does its job. It is what happens round the outside of it that catches people out. Fit a blind inside the recess and there has to be a gap at each side for it to clear the frame, plus a line of light under the bottom rail. On a bright morning that is enough to light the room.

If someone in the house genuinely needs it dark, hang the blind outside the recess and make it wider than the window, so the fabric laps onto the wall all the way round. You can also get pleated blinds with side channels that close the sides off.

Better to know that before you order than after.
