Design Proposals | Cambridge is a city defined by its history, but great architecture never stands still. In our latest design proposals, we tackle a timeless challenge: how to push modern boundaries while preserving the soul of a conservation area. It’s not about mimicking the past—it’s about crafting a respectful, bold conversation between old and new 🧡

We’ve loved working on these proposals to extend and reconfigure a beautiful property. At the heart of the concept is a contemporary ground floor extension housing a new kitchen + dining room, shaped by context-driven massing.

We designed a south-facing mono-pitch roof for solar capture, balanced with a green roof to respect neighbouring boundary heights. Externally, the modern warmth of rusted Corten steel + custom shrouds meets traditional clay bullnose tiles that perfectly complement the existing property ⭐️

The truth about “effortless” floating stairs… 🤫🛠️ (Swipe to see!)

Everyone says they love the simplicity of the cantilevered staircase at our Lantern House project in Newnham, . But as always, the real magic (and hard work) lies in what you don’t see…

When our clients asked us to replace their narrow, traditional timber staircase with something spectacular, we went straight to the drawing board. Our vision: floating brushed oak treads, integrated LED lighting, and a frameless glass balustrade.

Making a staircase look this minimalist requires a huge amount of preparation behind the scenes. We developed the concept + detailed design in close collaboration with the structural engineers at Gawn Associates and with the main contractor the daniels group.

Before a single oak tread could be installed, the structural opening had to be adapted and a heavy-duty steel frame was concealed alongside the existing wall, complete with all the necessary wiring and shadow gap detailing. Achieving these incredibly tight tolerances required flawless forward planning and precision on-site from the entire team ⭐️

As a finishing touch, we included a polished Venetian plastered wall which provides the perfect backdrop for this beautiful stair 🧡

The perfect finishing touch 🧡

We are in love with this beautiful oak door by Door couture at our recently completed central project! The ridged panelling, slatted side lights & concealed handle detail make for an incredible entrance to a home that we’ve completely transformed with an expansive rear extension and full-property renovation.

A huge thank you to our wonderful clients for letting us reimagine their home and to the Main Contractor, Adams & Newman, for their exceptional craftsmanship and hard work on site ⚒️

A huge thank you to the Cambridge Association of Architects (CAA - Cambridge Association of Architects) for organising and promoting such a brilliant event that highlights the importance of local expertise.

The exhibition is on display until the 14th of October at “The Cambridge Room” (Unit 55 Grafton Centre, Cambridge)—if you’re in the area, please do pop by and take a look!

Split-Level House | Breathing new life into a disjointed 60s split-level home in Suffolk 🏡

The owners of this property approached us with a challenge: untangle the maze-like layout, bring the outside in and give this 60’s gem a serious modern update.

We completely shifted the flow of the home by swapping an underused lower-ground garage for a expansive, light-filled kitchen and dining space that spills right out into a stunning sunken courtyard. Upstairs, a new living room extension and home office now open onto a raised terrace, connecting perfectly with the upper gardens!

Pocket House | MOOi were appointed to design this compact one-bedroom property in the Mill Road Conservation Area,  , replacing an existing double garage.

Built using an innovative ICF (Insulated Concrete Formwork) construction, much of the work on site was carried out by the client in order to minimise costs. The modest 45sqm plan is strategically arranged over two storeys, partially sunken at ground floor to reduce the height of the dwelling.

The exterior is clad in locally sourced, handmade gault brick slips with a feature brown   roof. The muted palette of materials makes a subtle yet characterful addition to the urban street scene.

Completed MOOi Project | We are delighted to announce the practical completion of our latest MOOi project and we couldn’t wait to share a first glimpse of the results 🧡

Originally designed by the renowned architects Wells, Hickman & Partners in the 1960’s, this property sits within a modernist development with a forward-thinking emphasis on communal courtyards, wellbeing, and community. Our vision was to breathe new life into the property while carefully honouring its incredible architectural roots.

Here is a sneak peek at the bespoke kitchen crafted by the talented team at Tomas Kitchen Living. Taking cues from the home’s original exposed timber beams, we paired warm, natural materials with elegant fluted panelling + textured splashback tiles from Claybrook. The finish perfectly complements the character and material palette of the original house.

Beyond the kitchen, we have completely reimagined the ground floor, introducing a new extension, beautiful bespoke joinery, a dedicated new utility space + custom home cinema.

We are incredibly grateful to our wonderful clients for their unwavering trust in our vision and their fantastic collaboration throughout the process. A huge thank you also to Benchmark Building & Roofing for their hard work and exceptional craftsmanship in delivering this project!

Client Feedback | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

‘We worked with MOOi on a full renovation and large extension to our house and couldn’t be happier with the result. From the first conversation, they took the time to properly understand what we wanted and came back with design ideas that were thoughtful, practical and creative.

Throughout the build, they were responsive and quick to help us solve problems as they came up. They genuinely care about getting the details right, not just handing over drawings and moving on. We’d recommend MOOi without hesitation to anyone planning a project like ours!’

We love client   and are delighted with our   rating after completing this project.

Beat the heat in your home without relying on just another AC unit! ☀️

The default response to hotter summers is often air-conditioning, but at MOOi we believe the real solution is architectural. A home’s comfort shouldn’t depend on retrofitted systems—it should be built into the design itself.

Strapping AC onto a property is not addressing the root cause. It’s costly to run and increases energy consumption, fighting against the heat absorbed by poor design. Instead, let’s rethink how we build.

Our recently completed project in Riverside, Cambridge puts this philosophy into action:

- Highly insulated building envelope: Keeping the internal temperature stable.

- Feature projecting canopy: Provides crucial shade to rear sliding doors.

- Electrically operated roof lights: Designed to purge heat effectively in the evenings.

- UV blocking glass: Installed on south and west elevations to minimize solar gain in summer while retaining warmth during the winter.

Want to improve your home’s thermal performance? Here are a few accessible tips:

🛠️ Upgrading windows? Opt for UV-blocking glass on south/west-facing elevations. It’s a straightforward, economical investment.

☀️ Need a temporary fix? Use UV-blocking fabrics, window film, or external sail shades to stop the sun before it reaches the glass and radiates heat internally.

🌬️ Best practice: Keep windows and curtains closed during the heat of the day, and open them early in the morning or late at night to purge trapped heat.

At MOOi, we explore resilient design strategies from the very first sketch. If you’re ready to build a home that works with the climate, not against it, we’d love to help! 🧡
