A Roman Red Ware Jug, Late Imperial c.3rd Century A.D.

This North African red slipware pottery jug was made in an area that is now in Tunisia. Roman North Africa was a thriving area, especially in the later part of the Roman period when this jug was produced. Large villas were built and great cities traded from the ports of North Africa, Red Ware from these ports was exported across the Roman Empire. The front applique depicts a man in long loose flowing clothes, holding a staff, and the reverse shows a double handled urn. These scenes are divided by an ornamental up right applique, similar decoration can be seen either side of the moulded handle. This pottery is part of a larger group of Roman pottery called Terra Sigillata.

The figure on the right matches one at Blenheim Palace, part of the Blenheim Palace Collection. This includes a very large display case full of Blanc de Chine porcelain. See Oriental Export Market Porcelain and its Influence on European Wares (Geoffrey A. Godden, Granada, 1979.ISBN 0246110570) page 272, plate 199.

A Blanc de Chine Porcelain Model of a Man, sometimes referred to as `Adam`, Dehua Kilns, Fujian Province, Kangxi Period c.1690-1710. The Chinese man with his neatly divided and tied hair stands on a simple oval rusticated mound with nothing more than a cloth around his waist which he appears to be holding onto.

Height : 23.2 cm (9 inches).

Provenance
Private Collection, the owner’s of the Royal Oak, Church Street, Nunnington, Yorkshire. Sadly this pub closed in December 2017.

A Very Rare Ming Blue and White Kraakware Porcelain Trapezoidal Shaped flask or Jar, Jingdezhen Kilns, China c.1600 – 1630.

Ming Kraak porcelain comes in many shapes and sizes, the most frequently encountered objects are dishes and bowls. The present example is of a form that I’ve not seen before, it makes me think of Islamic metal work, however I have not been able to find the prototype of this very rare piece.

A Small Late Ming Ko-Sometsuke Dish, Tianqi or Chongzhen Period (1621-1644).

Condition
A firing fault to the foot which chip, the glaze around it has a soft edge, showing this is a production fault. Minute frits to the rim, which is typical of Ming Ko-Sometsuke porcelain.

A Liao Pottery Cup Stand of flower shape, Liao Empire 907 – 1125. The fine grained Stoneware cup-stand is not neatly finished, this is typical of Liao pottery, the edges show uncleaned cut marks and the piece leans. The body is light but compact in nature with an uneven lightly tinted glaze containing tiny dark impurities. Cup stands of this form and related forms are well known from the Liao and Song dynasties, they occur in a wide variety of material, lacquer, silver, porcelain etc. Contemporary illustrations show that materials were interchangeable, for example a dark lacquer stand might support a white porcelain bowl (see below for an unusual ‘model’ of this type of cup and stand).
