Versatile - the art of tiling Versatile provides a friendly, professional tiling service in Kintyre & Mid Argyll. Aaron O’Hanlon

Born and brought up in Kintyre, I moved to Glasgow in 1999, where I began my tiling career alongside completing a degree at university. During this time, I gained invaluable skills both in the tiling industry and on a personal level. In 2009, I returned to Kintyre with my young family to continue my successful business. With Versatile, my aim is to provide a friendly, professional tiling service t

hroughout the Kintyre and Mid Argyll area. It is important to me to provide a cost effective, personal service where customer satisfaction is guaranteed. I believe very strongly in attention to detail and take pride in all that I do. All my work is completed to a high standard with excellent quality of workmanship. Work can be completed using a variety of materials including ceramic, porcelain, travertine, slate and granite tiles. On occasion, I am also asked to take on some other projects, either on their own or in conjunction with tiling jobs, which I am happy to do. These include laying real wood or laminate flooring, and replacing doors, door facings and skirtings, etc. Please feel free to contact me if you would like a free, no obligation quote, or if you would simply like to discuss a job with me.

Just completed this full bathroom renovation in Campbeltown. This was for a family member and I assumed it would be tear out, resheet walls and install new tiles, but unfortunately not!

The old tiles had been installed over thin plywood which had been attached to the brick walls with the odd strap of timber here and there. This was one of the worst jobs I've ever encountered so I had to end up framing out the whole room for new walls prior to tiling. The floor was also in terrible shape, had been patched up in several places, sagged in the middle and dropped about 20mm from right to left so this had to be all pulled up and rectified too, before a new subfloor was laid.

This got me to the stage I'd hoped to be at after the first day when I'd removed all the tiles and old suite etc. 12mm Jackoboard construction boards were installed in the shower area, fully sealed on seams and screws and waterproofed ready for tiles. The rest of the room was sheeted with plasterboard.

The new timber floor was then primed ready to be reinforced by laying 6mm Hardie backer board. All the joints were taped and filled, to create a stable floor for the new tiles and to stop any cracking down the line. This was then primed and finally self leveller applied to get the floor nice and level for tiles.

In the shower area we used rustic metro style tiles, combining a patterned version and a plain version of the same tile to create a stunning feature shower area. The rest of the walls were tiled in a contrasting 600mm x 300mm subtly textured white porcelain tile. For the floor we used an oak floorboard effect porcelain tile to add some warmth. These were 900mm x 1500mm in size.

I used epoxy grout on this job, which is a lot more expensive than cement-based grout and harder to use, but has a lot of advantages. It's 100% waterproof, non porous and chemically resistant to mould growth etc.

Finally I lowered the ceiling and fitted 4 downlighters, in place of the original single ceiling light and did away with the old wooden window sill, replacing it with a new pvc one.

All in all, this one just grew arms and legs but is an amazing transformation of what was one of the worst tiling jobs I've ever laid eyes on. 😅

This splashback was completed for the same customer as the previous ensuite. Using stone hexagonal tiles, in different shades of green, they created a lovely vintage feel to their new kitchen. Grey grout from used to tie in with the tones in the tiles. Really finished it off nicely.

Haven't uploaded in a while so here's a recent ensuite done in Peninver! Shower and bath area tiled with 600mm x 600mm porcelain tiles, with the same tiles used on the floor. Nicer than many main bathrooms, this one! 👌

Another splashback done this week, always enjoy doing them! This was a new kitchen 4 years ago that had never been tiled. There was an aluminum splashback behind the cooker only, which I removed prior to tiling.

Tiles are sage coloured bevelled metros, purchased locally at . White grout used with silver flat trims to finish. Customer delighted to finally get it tiled and super happy with the finished job.

Splashback season is well and truly upon us! Really nice new kitchen finished off perfectly with these matt white metro tiles. Dark grey grout ( colour 08) used to create a nice bit of contrast and really make the tiles pop. Dark metal flat edge trims were used and instead of cutting mitred corners, I bent them and shaped the corner of the tile to match. This can be seen best in the 10th photo. This creates a more aesthetically pleasing corner and ensures there are no sharp edges to worry about. Grey silicone used to match the grout. Onto another splashback next week!

Nice new shower room tiled for a very regular customer. Shower walls done with blue zellige effect tiles. These tiles come in several different shades and textures - creating a classic, rustic look. Tiles were only 60mm high, so took 36 rows to go from the bottom to the top! 😅

For the floor, the customer chose these 200mm x 200mm patterned porcelain tiles, inspired by vintage French tiles. 2 different shades of grey grout from were used to finish the look, with matching silicone. Square edge metal trim used to finish either side.

This will be lovely when it's all finished, will post a couple of pics when it's done!

Finally managed to get pictures of this bathroom that was completed just before Christmas last year. Done in conjunction with , there was a big push to get it done for the big day!

All the walls were tiled, three of them with 600mm x 300mm grey porcelain, set in a running bond 1/3 offset. I managed to wrap them round both corners, so they run continuously from start to finish. The shower feature wall was done with stone effect split face tiles giving a nice bit of texture and breaking the grey up. adhesive & grout used all round, with white grout on the large tiles and grey for the split face.

Customers were very happy with the end result, get in touch if you're interested in having something like this done!

Enjoyed doing this feature fireplace in Campbeltown, something a wee bit different. Porcelain tiles designed to replicate the look of traditional brickwork were used with larger contrasting tiles on the hearth and a timber surround to finish. The customer is going to stain it to match.

This job was for a previous customer who had recently had her kitchen splashback tiled. She contacted me asking if I could do something with the empty space beside her fridge. She wanted more drawers, so we decided to install 2 x 600mm, 3 drawer units with 2 x 600mm wall units above. This was bought locally from and matched the existing kitchen as closely as we could. A matching worktop (metal end trims were requested for better durability) and tiling finishes off the new area. Customer is over the moon with her new baking station!

Recent full bathroom tiled in Campbeltown. I did all the prep on this one, including resheeting the walls, waterproofing the shower area and installing HardieBacker board on the floor prior to tiling. I also installed a new PVC ceiling. Walls and floors done with 600mm x 300mm highly polished marble effect porcelain. The brushed gold fixtures and fittings really ties the room together and creates a very elegant look. All in all a stunning new bathroom that these pictures don't really do justice!

A very nice unique splashback just finished. These are porcelain tiles with a luxurious metallic effect, offering a varied look across the area, the colour tone changing depending on the light. These look even better in the flesh!
