Original watercolour view of the Sugar Loaf by Edgar James Maybery (1887–1966)

Not all landscapes ask to be seen.
Some ask to be remembered.

There’s a stillness here that feels familiar, even if you’ve never stood in this exact spot. A soft rise of green, the quiet line of a path, and beyond it, fixed in that blue-grey distance, the unmistakable silhouette of the Sugar Loaf.

Maybery was a Welsh artist rooted in Monmouthshire, known for his watercolours and etchings of the surrounding countryside. Trained at South Kensington and a regular exhibitor with the Royal Cambrian Academy, his work captures the character of the land with a quiet, unforced confidence.

This piece feels less like a map and more like a memory. The kind of view that reveals itself slowly in the shifting light, in the rhythm of the hills, in those wind-shaped trees standing watch on the edge of the valley.

It doesn’t shout. It doesn’t need to.

It simply waits - for the right wall, the right moment, the right person who recognises it without needing to ask why.
