Every design starts with sketching out roughly where everything will go...just rough sketches. These help to work out the space and get a feel for the flow and rough size of everything.

Then comes the detail...in CAD/SketchUp or hand drawn and using templates...it doesn't matter how you get there but scaled plans are crucial to a successful design. If it doesn't fit or work, it doesn't matter how fab your colours and materials are, it will still be a bad design.

I tired around 4 layouts before I finally settled on the final plan and could then add the details.

Then it's ALL in the detail.

Every item should earn its place.

Every change affects another part of the design.

Sometimes you have to take something away before it works.

Then it's tweaking until it FEELS right, has met the brief and you can't think of anything to add or any better way to plan it.

That's when you can put it in front of your client.

That's when it's ready.

Why I Design. Why I Teach.

I've often been asked whether I love designing or teaching more.

The truth is, I can't separate the two.

At the heart of both is the same belief.

I believe people thrive in thoughtfully designed environments.

Whether I'm creating a home where a family can truly relax, designing a workplace that inspires collaboration and wellbeing, or mentoring someone taking their first steps into interior design, my purpose is always the same.

To create an environment where people can flourish.

When I design, I'm completely in my element.

I love understanding how people live, work and interact with a space. Every decision I make is about more than how a room looks. It's about how it feels, how it functions and how it improves the lives of the people who use it every single day.

That same passion shapes the way I teach.

I don't want my students to simply complete assignments or pass assessments.

I want them to grow in confidence.

To discover abilities they didn't realise they had.

To leave believing they belong in this profession.

Some of the comments that mean the most to me aren't about design at all.
They're from students who tell me:

"You've given me back my confidence."

"I didn't feel stupid for not knowing enough."

"I couldn't wait to get home and carry on learning."

Those words remind me why I do what I do.

Knowledge can be taught.

Software can be learned.

Design principles can be practised.

But confidence, curiosity and the courage to keep growing come from learning in an environment where you feel supported, challenged and inspired.
That's the environment I strive to create every day.
