I spent a lot of today writing an application for an art competition. I submitted ‘’Polar’’ and decided to share some of the description I wrote about it here as a voiceover

And on a less serious note here is the painting translated into emoji form😅:

’’Polar’’ is about political polarisation, culture and class wars, and how the impact of current political trends play out both across particular identities, and the plantery system at large. Themes include climate change (there are depictions of melting ice, fire, rising sea levels, coal trapped in glaciers), the growth of the far right and anti-woke sentiment (war against woke, sensitive snowflakes, leftist tears), as well as neurodiversity, sensitivity and ‘specialness’.

I make use of varied but often connected words. At once serious and playful, many words contain multiple meanings… ‘Cap’ references ice cap, capitalism, and a planetary cap to growth. ‘Pol’ is short hand for polarisation, political, polar, pole, poll, police! ‘Melt’ refers to melting sea ice, to right-wing attacks against leftists labelled too sensitive (’leftist meltdowns’), and to actual autistic meltdowns. ‘Ice’ references both glacial ice, and the US immigration authorities. ‘Sen’ is for senses, sensitivity and the acronym special educational needs. ‘Uni’ is both unique and universal. *smile/smile upside down*

Overall, the painting aims to blend the personal with the political, the particular with the universal, in order to highlight damaging power relations, our extreme interconnectedness, and possibilities for solidarity across difference.

If you’re looking for a bold, unique, progressive art piece that is dripping with meaning, and which is bound to spark conversations and light up any wall - this may be it!

‘’Polar’’ is now available to purchase from my store at: https://www.sianatkins.com/polar (website link in bio) - order before the 16th to get it in time for christmas!

My process, style and techniques really came together in this piece: I started by having fun putting down different words and symbols without too much thought, knowing a lot of it would be fully or partially covered by paint later. I blended different shades of blue together to create a gradient background. Had a happy accident of creating ice cube like shapes 🧊 through some brush pressing (top right). I added a big sweep of contrasting yellow, followed by a glistening and melty snowball with fluid acylic. Then smaller blobs of colour in acrylic, oil stick, and neon spray paint (the orange and pink neon really does something to me 😍). Since becoming inspired by Basquiat a few weeks ago, i then wanted to add a lot of text and symbols to the space around (using markers, but also etching into wet paint to reveal the underlayer of colour), which i really enjoyed— I will talk more about the words, and the meaning of the painting in tomorrow’s post!

I can’t wait to keep evolving in this style 😁

Do you have a favourite part of the painting? Leave a comment! 🤍🩶🩵💙🩷🧡💛
