AFTER … BEFORE

The challenge was to convert a grey dining room into a warm & welcoming, multi-purpose space for reading, games, occasional dining and book storage. Our client also wanted it to work through the changing seasons rather than be too cosy and wintery or too springlike and coastal.

The scheme combines weathered linens, varying textures and pattern all beneath the oak leaf chandelier and surrounded by the wraparound “Bloomsbury-esque” wallpaper.

Additional Seating

I almost always try to include an extra seat or two when planning a room.

And not another dining chair or sofa, but somewhere to perch informally, to encourage conversation and to generally make life more convivial and comfortable. More often than not, they become the best loved pieces and get used the most.

Swipe through for 9 reasons I find myself coming back to this in so many of my projects. Would you make house room for any of these?

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition trip🖌️
From the (very) olden days of my History of Art A-level to sourcing and using art in my projects, art is such a great love. Felt so lucky to go to a viewing at the RA and with two very clever girls celebrating their degree results. Sadly I was too late to buy the Grayson Perry and Cilla by Joe Lycett wasn’t for sale😔

S T Y L I N G can make a big investment project look twice the value. Or slash it without.

Your 18months, big budget project is almost done.

Living on a building site has taken its toll and you’ve run out of steam and run out of budget. The furniture is in and the curtains are up.

I get it, it is so tempting to shut the door on everyone and leave it at that.

But sadly no one can see so much of the high value work that has gone into your project: ground works, heating, cabling, steels, labour.

In my experience the finishing touches are the most overlooked part of a large project, yet is the element that brings maximum value per spend to the entire project.

Artwork, lamps, books and accessories instantly add your personality as well as warmth and balance to an interior scheme. Don’t think of them as optional extras, they’re fundamental parts of the design.

Whatever your budget, my advice is to ring fence a portion of your budget for this final, crucial layer. It protects the investment you’ve already made and will elevate your entire result.

Some of my favourite places for locating art and accessories include:

Thomond Antiques, Signature Art Gallery (both in Kendal in the Lake District), Yew Tree Barn is an absolute local treasure trove (near Cartmel in the Lake District). Then further afield Avocet Antiques in Norfolk provide an incredible sourcing and shipping service.

Finally, Zara and H&M Home plus La Redoute can be wonderful sources for bits and pieces.

Please share a few of your favourite best kept art and accessories secret sources, I’d love to know.

Thank you for the thank you.

The main wish from this client was for the almost entirely grey home she recently bought to feel more joyful. We are so grateful to know that our work together has helped to make this happen.

Hello, I’m Sarah and if you’re new here, a very warm welcome. Thank you for being here.

I run an interior design studio based on the edge of the beautiful English Lake District, specialising in period homes, from lakeside manor houses to quintessential whitewashed Lakeland cottages.

While many of our interior design projects are local to Cumbria and the North West, we are also lucky enough to work on some wonderful projects further afield. Current projects include a family home on the Lancashire coast, a hunting lodge in the Leicestershire countryside, and a London townhouse.

For the past 18 years, I’ve loved helping many wonderful clients create homes that feel considered, comfortable and entirely personal to them and their family.

I see that my role is to take the weight off your shoulders. From the initial creation of beautiful, practical designs through to all the things you don’t see - the sourcing, budgeting, logistics, co-ordinating and working closely with so many trusted and talented people (special shout out to Hannah here). We can manage the full interior design process from start to finish.

And finally, a few random things you might not know about me (possibly all oddly relevant in their own way):

I’m a farmer’s daughter
I’m a mean reverser of trailers (see above)
I’m slightly obsessed with my seemingly untrainable sausage dog, Twiggy

If you’re planning a full home project or need focused interior design advice, I’d love to hear from you.

The furniture wasn’t the problem.

In fact, the furniture in this Lake District sitting room was already fabulous.

The client wanted to convert the grey decor she’d inherited when buying her Victorian home into something more colourful and ‘joyful’.

We brought the sitting room to life with contrasting textures, combining pattern and plenty of colour within her favourite palette.

The stars of the show being the footstool clad in my fave luxury fabric (with its slight sheen) against the matte tones of the bespoke rug.

The result is now a layered, memorable and ‘joyful’ sitting room
