Bluebell Love Hello! I’m Liz — the maker and illustrator behind Bluebell Love. About Bluebell Love

Welcome to Bluebell Love! If you’re ever in the area, come and say hello!

From my garden studio on Dartmoor, I create colourful, nature-inspired embroidery designs and handmade accessories to stitch and unwind with. I’m Liz, the creative mind and maker behind this colourful corner of the crafting world. Working from my cosy garden studio on Dartmoor, Devon, I bring nature-inspired designs to life with a blend of traditional and modern techniques. The Journey Begins…
Blu

ebell Love started in 2015 with a simple block print and a love for lavender. What began as hand-carved lino blocks and small batches of lavender bags quickly grew into a full collection of handmade accessories and embroidery kits. My first design—a charming mix of bees and flowers—paved the way for a brand that celebrates playful colours, whimsical patterns, and the joy of handmade craftsmanship. From Block to Digital
Over the years, my craft has evolved. I still cherish the hands-on process of block and screen printing, but I’ve also embraced the world of digital design. This blend of old and new allows me to experiment with vibrant colour palettes and intricate details, creating unique fabrics that are a joy to work with. In 2024, I introduced my first digitally printed fabrics, combining the ease and precision of modern printing with my love for creative design. Embroidery with a Twist
Embroidery has always been close to my heart. Starting with cross-stitch (though I admit, I wasn’t a fan of the counting!), I soon fell in love with the freedom and creativity that embroidery offers. My prints are perfect for bringing to life with thread, and I’m thrilled to offer a range of embroidery kits and starter sets for both seasoned stitchers and beginners alike. Each kit is designed to inspire and guide you, providing everything you need to create something beautiful and uniquely yours. A Commitment to Sustainability
I believe in making thoughtful choices, which is why I prioritize eco-friendly methods wherever possible. From the water-based, non-toxic paints I use in my hand-printed fabrics to the sustainable packaging that wraps each order, I’m dedicated to running a business that’s kind to our planet. I also source my materials locally within the UK, supporting fellow small businesses and reducing my carbon footprint. Join the Bluebell Love Community
Crafting is more than just a hobby—it’s a way to connect, relax, and express your creativity. Whether you’re shopping for a gift or treating yourself, I hope my products bring as much joy to your life as they do to mine. You can often find me at local markets and craft fairs, sharing my passion for embroidery and offering hands-on demonstrations. Thank you for supporting Bluebell Love and being part of this colourful journey. Happy stitching! Warm wishes,
Liz

I’ve made a little bit of progress with my gull sky this afternoon 🪡
I’ve started adding in the brighter blues, and I think the ‘shape’ of the sky is juusst about there 😊 So now, all I’m going to do is keep stitching and filling everything in until all the fabric is covered and I’m happy with how it’s all blending together 🪡

I’m also making lots of scribbled notes as I go for the blog write up… I already feel like this is going to be a chunky one 😅

Phewee, what a wonderful week! 🥰 Thanks for having us, Scotland 💙

We've been spending the week exploring the lovely Trossachs 😁 Soo many adventures, incredible views, and picnics.... I don't even know where to start 😅

We were pretty lucky with the weather too 😄 Just one very wet day (poor Bessie - not the happiest that day, so we kept her snuggled up in her carrier 🥰🐾), but then sunshine and showers for us 🌧☀️

🥾 Bagged another Munro - Ben Vorlich (985m) 🏔 Just look at those views from the trig point! 🤣 We had stunning views alll the way up... but those clouds would just not clear at the top for us ☁️ Pretty blustery up there too 😄

🥪 Found some 10/10 picnic spots! How perfect is that bench overlooking Loch Earn?! And I only made a good picnic for midges once 😅

🧶 I spent my evenings snuggled up with the crochet blanket that I started last year - I hadn't picked it up in ages, but managed to get quite a few rows done 😊 I’m still ignoring those ends though 🙈

We also loved trying out our new binoculars! They’re so much brighter and clearer than our old ones 😊 They got plenty of use at the red squirrel hide at Aberfoyle Visitor Centre - aww, I could have stayed watching them for hours 😍

And I absolutely had to try whisky in my hot choccy at the Loch Katrine cafe 😋

Oh, and we ended with a little stop-off at Glasgow Botanic Gardens 🌿 Absolutely brilliant glasshouses! Super impressed with the planting (and it's free entry!) - just disappointed I couldn't spend a bit more time there, but we still had a veerrryyy long drive home ahead of us 😅

But now we're back! 😊

I would say well rested... but we packed so much into the week, I could do with a couple more days to recover 🤭

I'll be back in the studio tomorrow 😄🪡

Holiday mode has been activated 😊☀️ We’re now taking a little break from the studio 🥰

We’ll be getting out and about, exploring, walking, picnicking, and recharging the ol’ batteries a bit (eee… I can’t wait! 😄). Although the weather is looking a little rainy for us… typical 😅

The website's staying open as normal, but I won’t be posting out any of your lovely goodies until I’m back in the studio on the 8th June 🪡💌

Thank you so much for your patience while I take a little breather 🥰💛

🪡 Whipped Backstitch – Stitch of the week Pt.20 😄

This is such a lovely line stitch and a perfect one for outlines and lettering 😍 It has a really similar look to Stem Stitch and can be a great alternative.

🪡 Start with a row of Backstitches (check out Stitch of the week Pt.16 if you want to learn those first 😊).
Then come up at the end of the row and simply whip each stitch by sliding your needle underneath each Backstitch.
It doesn’t matter which direction you whip in - just make sure you keep looping around in the same direction each time to create that lovely twisted cord effect 😊

✨ You might find it easier to use the eye of the needle while whipping, just so you don’t snag the stitches or fabric.
You can whip using the same colour as your Backstitches, or add a second colour for that fun candy cane effect 😍

🪡 You can really easily change the look of this stitch by adjusting the Backstitch length:
Short stitches make a tighter cord (just don’t make them so tiny you can’t fit your needle underneath 😅), while longer stitches make a looser twist. You can also make fun patterns by changing the stitch lengths along the row.

✨ And don’t forget - your whipping thread needs to be long enough to finish the whole line. You can’t really stop and restart halfway through 😅

You can also completely change the look by using different numbers of strands - 1 strand makes a lovely delicate line, while more strands makes a bolder, more raised look.

🪡 And for wider lines, you can double up the rows of Backstitch and whip both rows together.

So, the ratings……

🌟 Usefulness – 3/5 (5 = “use it everywhere!”)
A go-to stitch for outlines and lettering 😊 But we do lose points for not being a filling stitch and it’s not ideal if there’s already lots of stitching nearby.

🌟 Prettiness – 4/5 (5 = “oooo, so pretty!”)
Loove that twisted cord texture and that candy cane effect with two colours! 😍

🌟 Faff Factor – 2/5 (5 = “so annoying it’s not worth the effort!”)
Any sliding-under-stitches situation comes with a bit of faff 😅 But it’s minimal, especially with longe

It’s lovely stitchy chaos on my desk at the moment 😄🪡 (Organised chaos, though 😏).

I’ve got a “stitch of the week” ready to edit and add to the library, a cute little make-and-take design in progress for my stand at in September (I really love how this is coming along so far – it just needs some colour tweaks 🥰), aaand of course my gully panel stitching too 😊

But while the studio has been heating up to approximately one million degrees this week (wowwee – it has been rather toasty, hasn’t it? ☀️), I’ve mostly been doing a couple of hours out there first thing in the morning and then abandoning ship and retreating to work somewhere cooler instead 😅

So my desk is basically the result of me hopping between projects and escaping the heat all week 😅

I’ve just got a couple more days now before I take my little break 😊 So I’m hoping to get the stitch of the week finished and uploaded, make a bit more progress on my gully stitching… aaaand probably have a tiny tidy up too 😄🪡

This is how my gully stitching is looking so far 😄🪡 Very early days... but I thought I'd show you anyway 😄

Usually I stitch my skies in bands of colour and blend them together, but this time there wasn't really much of a plan (just to make it nice and sunny ☀️) - I've just been enjoying some freestyle, making it up as I go stitching 😄

I've not been focused on fully covering the fabric yet - I've just been stitching to place colours and get a bit of a base down (if that makes sense 😅).

But I think I’ve got a good starting point now, so next I’m going to go back in with some brighter blues ☀️💙 and then gradually build up more stitches until all the fabric is covered and I’m happy with how it’s looking 😄🪡

Hello! I’m Liz - the illustrator, maker and stitcher behind Bluebell Love 😊 So pleased to meet you!

Here, I create colourful, nature-inspired embroidery kits, designs and handmade accessories to help you slow down, relax and enjoy some cosy creative time 🥰🪡

It all happens from my little garden studio on Dartmoor, Devon (UK), fuelled heavily by tea 🫖 and carefully supervised by Bessie 🐾😏 You’ll see her around here quite a bit… and some of you may have even met her at one of my in-person events 🥰

Everything is digitally illustrated and designed by me, inspired by my love of nature, adventures and exploring the beautiful outdoors 🌸

Once drawn, my illustrations are either printed onto fabric to become fun embroidery kits and stitchable panels, sewn into colourful accessories (thread catcher baskets, lavender bags and more 🪡) on my trusty sewing machine, or printed onto wood to make super cute needle minders 😍

I’m all about making embroidery feel fun and approachable - with no rules and no pressure - just the joy of creating 😊🪡

I hope my designs bring a little colour and joy to your day 💛

Just a little heads up ☀️ I’m going to be taking a little break in a couple of weeks’ time 🥰

I’ll be getting out and about, exploring, walking, picnicking, and recharging the ol’ batteries a bit (eee… I can’t wait! 😄).... hopefully, in lots of lovely sunshine 🤞😄

The website will stay open as normal, but I won’t be posting out any of your lovely goodies between 28th May and 8th June 🪡💌 But any orders popped in during that time will be packed up and on their way as soon as I’m back in the studio 😊💛

I’m gonna be stitching my gully panel next! 😄🪡
I’ve had a little break since finishing the Bee and Echinacea panel (I always seem to need a tiny moment before diving straight into the next one 😅) - but I think I’m just about ready to start!

For this one, I’m thinking I might go all out with an all-over stitch 😍 I haven’t tried that on one of these panels yet, so I’m really excited to see how it turns out fully stitched.

And because I want the stitching to go right up to the edge of the hoop (I’m not really a fan of seeing the fabric edge 😄), I’m going to need to stitch this one in a slightly bigger hoop and extend the design out a little.

So now I’m hoping I’ve got a 6" hoop hiding somewhere in my stash so I can pick out some threads and get started… otherwise I might need to pause for a moment while I get one organised 🙈😅
