This weekend I picked up this lampshade for the first time in nearly two months.
The last six months have been difficult since my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, and the last few weeks especially have felt very heavy. Somewhere in between home visits. hospital visits, a million phone calls and trying to keep going, I realised I needed a release… something just for me, even if only for a little while.
So this weekend I got back on my Peloton bike for the first time in months and did a 30 minute spin class, and I came back to this piece.
It’s made using vintage Japanese kimono silk, with 42 hand-strung strands of crystal and glass beads sewn on one by one — a job I honestly reached a point of hating for a while. But sitting quietly and working with my hands again felt comforting in a way I didn’t expect.
After months of sitting untouched with only seven strands attached, it finally feels like this lampshade is coming back to life. Just the final beading and braid left to do now ✨
