Growing up doesnā€™t mean the wonder has to go.

Especially not in the one space thatā€™s supposed to be entirely yours.

Iā€™m currently obsessed with 2x Home Office moodboards for two parents who both wanted real, functional home offices that can actually hold down a working day - but neither of them wanted to leave who they are at the door to get it.

Function and personality arenā€™t opposites. A desk can be serious about productivity and still let a little bit of childlike wonder creep in. Thatā€™s not immaturity, itā€™s authenticity.

- This four-poster creates a little world within Mabelā€™s world- cosy, enclosed and made for sleeping, reading, dreaming and retreating.
- Because beautiful design should feel as good as it looks.

2) Because every square inch should earn its place.
- Storage that grows with her.
- Space for books.
- Space for Lego.
- Space for crafting.
- Space for displaying the things she loves.
- A room can work incredibly hard without looking like it does.

3) Neurospicy vibes

3/4 A childā€™s bedroom should have somewhere to do absolutely nothing.

Wellā€¦ almost nothing.

This spinning, twirling reading chair is one of my favourite things in Mabelā€™s room because it isnā€™t just a chair.

Itā€™s a reading nook.
A play space.
A place to curl up.
A place to swing and spin.
A place for big thoughts.
And somewhere to retreat and regulate when the world feels a bit much.

Add a basket, a blanket and a little softness underfoot and suddenly youā€™ve created a tiny sanctuary.

And thatā€™s the thing about designing for children:

You donā€™t have to choose between beautiful and practical.

You can design for their sensory needs, their imagination, their independence and their everyday lives - and make the whole bloody thing gorgeous while youā€™re at it.

2/4 Every square inch should earn its place. Especially in a childā€™s bedroom.

Mabel needed somewhere to craft, draw and create - but she also needed somewhere to build her frankly impressive Lego empire.

So we designed for both.

A proper desk for making things.
Flat surfaces for Lego.
Open shelving for books and treasures.
A bespoke art display above the reinstated hearth.

And storage that can change as she changes - including two full wardrobes with reconfigurable internals and those gorgeous little blue surprises inside.

Because children grow.

Their interests change.

Their stuff multiplies at an alarming rate. šŸ˜‚

The trick isnā€™t trying to create a room that stays perfect.

Itā€™s creating one that can evolve with them.

1/4 Kids deserve hotel-level comfort too.

Actually, I think they deserve better.

When I design a childā€™s bedroom, Iā€™m not just thinking about where the bed goes and what colour the walls should be.

Iā€™m thinking about how the room feels to them.

This four-poster gives Mabel a little world within her world. A cosy, enclosed space to retreat to, read in, daydream in and sleep in.

The layered bedding adds softness and warmth, while the lighting has been moved to sit in a cluster above the bed - creating something that feels magical rather than simply functional.

And because this room occasionally needs to work as a spare room too, the bedding can change with it.

Good design does more than look beautiful. It changes how a room makes you feel.

Your home is not a hotel. But thereā€™s a lot we can steal from them.

This week Iā€™ve been looking at the tiny design decisions hotels make that change how a space feels ā€” often without you even noticing them.

Because good design isnā€™t just about choosing beautiful things.

Itā€™s about anticipating the person using the room.

Where will they put their stuff?
What will they need at 7am?
What do they see first?
What would make their life 10% easier?

Thatā€™s the bit Iā€™m interested in.

Not decorating. Designing.
