If the timing isn't quite right, we're always happy to talk it though.

Before you brief an architect, appoint a builder, or choose a kitchen - there's a piece of strategic thinking that should happen first. It almost never does.

Our Project Scoping Session defines your brief, gets your priorities in the right order, and gives you an honest picture of what the budget actually needs to look like.

For Small Business Week this June, we're going a step further: before your session, we consult with our preferred construction partner on your specific project, so every recommendation is sense-checked against practical building reality, not just design thinking.

4 sessions available. Must be booked in June. From £850 + VAT, with the construction consultation included.

This week I looked at a set of plans and something stood out immediately.

The sunniest rooms in the house? A utility room and a downstairs loo.

The kitchen – where the family would spend most of their time together – was buried in the middle of the house. No natural light. Artificial lighting on all day, every day.

It’s one of the most common frustrations I hear. And it’s almost always fixable….if you catch it early enough.

Before you commit to a layout, it’s worth asking one question: are the lightest parts of your home being used in the best way?

Sometimes the most valuable thing a fresh pair of eyes can offer isn’t a clever solution. It’s spotting the thing that’s been there all along.

📩 We offer a short pre-design review – get in touch if you’d like to find out more.

From storage locker to finished rooms 🎉
This is what installation day actually looks like.

Before the reveal, there's the unpacking. The coordinating. The careful positioning of every piece that's been months in the making. It's organised chaos in the best possible sense!

This is one of our favourite parts of the process. Not only is it a team effort, but it's also a day of hard work and genuinely good fun - because it's the moment everything moves from plan to reality. Seeing the client's reaction is a reminder of exactly why we do this. 🥂

15 years of The House Ministry 🥂

What started at a dining room table, born from Julia’s own frustrations of getting it wrong and the difficulties managing trades, quickly became something more.
A belief that homes work better when someone is there steering the ship, starting with how homes should work and then how they should look.

From a one-woman studio, learning every part of the industry firsthand, to a growing team delivering over 70 beautiful, well-managed homes (and still counting)
The dream was to create a business that could provide inspiring designs, the highest level of service to clients, as well as employment for the next generation of designers - and we’ve achieved just that.

A heartfelt thank you to every client, supplier and trade who’s been part of the journey.

And to the team behind it today:

Julia - captain of the ship, steering each project from how it works, to how it feels.

Neil - Julia’s fellow director and husband, there from day one, always keeping an eye on the numbers and the bigger picture

Jess - who joined in 2022, bringing fresh design thinking and creating design visuals, that even we still have to double take compared to the final result

Kelsey - our tech and delivery expert whose been onboard since 2024, keeps everything moving behind the scenes, from schedules to suppliers

Our fantastic associates and freelancers who provide additional support alongside the core team

Still steering the ship, now with a crew alongside.
Here’s to the next 15 🥂

When everything comes together as it should 🏡

A finished home is never the work of one person.
It’s a collective effort behind the scenes - trusted trades and suppliers, carefully coordinated, all working from a clear and considered plan.

When everything is aligned from the very start, the result feels exactly as it should.

This is how our client described that moment:

“Extremely happy with the result. Really fantastic little black book of tradespeople who were such high quality professionals. Loads of time and pressure taken off us. LOVE the installation process, just walking into a finished home!”

This is what a well-managed project feels like - clear, well handled, and ready to be lived in from the moment you walk through the door.

One of the most expensive sentences in a renovation is:

“While you’re here…” 🤔

While you’re here could we move this light.

While you’re here could we change that door.

While you’re here could we adjust that wall slightly.

Each one sounds perfectly reasonable at the time. But during a renovation, small changes rarely stay small.

Moving a light might mean new wiring through plaster.

Changing a door might affect joinery, electrics and decoration.

Suddenly several trades are involved and the cost starts to grow faster than you’d like. 💸

Interestingly, we don’t hear “while you’re here” very often on projects we’re running.

Those ideas usually come up much earlier, when we’re sitting down with clients talking through how the house will actually work day to day. ✏️

Once that thinking has been done properly, there are far fewer surprises once work begins.

Changing a drawing is easy.

Changing a wall is not.

💬 A question I hear surprisingly often:

“Can you just pull together a design for us in a few days?”

From the outside a finished room can look quite straightforward - a new layout, some good lighting, furniture that works together nicely.

But what you don’t see is the complexity and number of people involved behind the scenes. Architects, builders, joiners, electricians, curtain makers, upholsterers, decorators, suppliers… all needing to be working from the same idea at the same time. ⚙️

That part only really works if the thinking has happened first and everyone is clear what they are doing.

It’s a bit like going to the hairdresser with a photo of a celebrity haircut you love. You might like the look of it, but a good hairdresser will still ask a few questions first - how much time you spend on it, whether you swim or run regularly, whether you actually want to style it every morning.

Homes are no different.

What works beautifully in one house - for one family - isn’t automatically right somewhere else.

Which is why thoughtful projects tend to start earlier than people expect.

We only take on a small number of projects each year, so conversations about next year’s homes usually begin around now.

I was looking ahead in the diary earlier and realised how quickly a year disappears.

If you’re thinking about updating your home, it’s worth pausing for a moment and asking yourself - do you want to still be discussing it this time next year, or actually sitting in the finished space? 💭

The projects that look straightforward at the end usually have quite a lot going on behind the scenes before anything starts on site. Drawings agreed. Decisions made in the right order. Materials chosen early enough so no one is waiting around.

It’s rarely the build that catches people out. It’s all the thinking and decision-making beforehand.

We deliberately only take on a small number of projects each year, which means conversations about next year tend to happen earlier than most people expect.

It’s nothing dramatic, just down to the right timing.

Next year arrives whether we’re ready or not. If you’d like to sense-check your thinking before committing to anything bigger, we offer an early design review for exactly that reason.
