Choosing curtains? Don't forget to think about what happens when they're open.

It's easy to spend time choosing the perfect fabric and colour, only to discover that the finished curtains cover more of your window than expected when drawn back.

This is particularly important with wide patio doors, bifold doors and large living room windows as this installation of ours shows.

Different curtain headings gather differently.

Traditional pinch pleats create structured folds, while Wave curtains hang in regular curves and can provide a particularly neat stack when open.

As an illustration, Silent Gliss's curtain planning guidance suggests Wave curtains typically occupy around 23% of the track width when gathered, compared with approximately 33% for traditional pleated curtains. The actual space needed depends on the fabric, heading and track arrangement.

It's also worth checking whether your curtains can stack beyond the glazing, how the track will be fitted and whether there is sufficient space for the folds.

One question we would always encourage you to ask is whether the window covering will improve the comfort of your room as well as its appearance.

A full-height shutter can provide an additional barrier across the glazing when closed. A honeycomb blind works differently, using pockets of air within the fabric to reduce heat transfer. Properly lined curtains can also help, particularly when they cover the window generously.

And there's another detail that is often overlooked: gaps around the fitting.

Even an excellent insulating material may deliver less benefit if the installation allows air to circulate freely around it.

There’s a lovely garden view behind these kitchen blinds — watch it open up as the metal slats gather at the top.

That flexibility is part of the appeal of Venetian blinds. You can leave them lowered and tilt the slats to adjust the light, then raise them when you want the window uncovered.

A shutter sample tells you about the finish. It doesn’t tell you whether the panels will open comfortably beside your sofa.

That’s why we look at the whole window when planning shutters: how the opening sections work, where the handles project and what sits nearby.

Most day-to-day adjustments involve tilting the louvres, so the panels can stay closed while you change the light and privacy. But you’ll still want sensible access for opening windows and cleaning the glass.

There’s a useful detail in this video: once the external screen raises, the glazing is uncovered again.

That gives you a choice throughout the day. Lower the screen when you want more screening or softer light, then raise it to enjoy the view. It also leaves the inside of the room free for your chosen curtains, blinds and furnishings.

Fabric selection makes a real difference. A more open weave can retain more of the outward view, while a denser fabric provides greater screening. Daytime privacy also depends on the light on either side, so we wouldn’t treat a screen as a replacement for bedroom curtains after dark.

The installation needs thought too. Cassette position, side guides and access through glazed doors should be considered together, particularly if you’re planning new windows or an extension.
