Do we spend too much time designing what people see - and not enough time designing what people feel?
This was one of the questions I explored recently at TechX/LIA, where I was invited to speak about lighting for wellbeing.
Perhaps surprisingly, my staring point wasn’t lighting.
It was people.
Before thinking about products, fittings or even lighting levels, i want to understand who’s going to live in a space.
How do they want to feel? How do they need to function? Do they need to focus, entertain, relax, recover or sleep?
Because we don’t experience our environment as a collection of individual design decisions, we experienced them as a whole. Light interacts with colour, materials, acoustics, texture, proportion and layout and together those things influence not only what we see, but how space makes us feel.
It’s one of the reasons I developed the Conscious Living Framework ™ to look at the spaces we Inhabit through three interconnected lenses, experiential intelligence, environmental intelligence, and human alignment.
Of-course beautiful aesthetics matter enormously, but I believe beauty is felt much more deeply than purely through a visual lens.
