EXPLORING THE LAYOUT - LIVING ROOM

At Helo Interiors, I always start by understanding how my clients live in a space - not just how they want it to look.

For this project, the living room was long and relatively narrow, with a direct connection to the open-plan kitchen and dining area. The layout therefore needed to create a natural flow between spaces, while still giving the living room its own sense of purpose.

I worked through a series of layout options with the client, exploring different ways to balance relaxing, entertaining, reading and listening to music, alongside storage, display and AV requirements.

This collaborative stage is so important. Every client uses their home differently, so the best layout isn’t always the most obvious one. By understanding how a room is used day to day, I can test different arrangements and create a space that genuinely works for the people living in it.

Each option explored the relationship between the sofa, armchairs, TV and fireplace, as well as circulation, gallery walls and bespoke joinery for books, records and personal pieces.

Good interior design isn’t about imposing a look on a room. It’s about creating a space that feels considered, personal and completely suited to your life.

YOUR HOME SHOULD TELL YOUR STORY - NOT SOMEONE ELSE’S

It’s easy to save hundreds of beautiful images on Pinterest or Instagram. But the most successful interiors aren’t copies of someone else’s home.

They’re personal. To you.

They reflect the people who live there, the way they spend their time and the atmosphere they want to create.

When I begin a new project, I don’t start by asking which trend you like. I start by asking questions about you.

- How do you spend your weekends?
- Do you love entertaining?
- Where do you naturally gather as a family?
- What do you wish worked better?

The answers to those questions shape every design decision that follows. Because the most beautiful homes aren’t the ones that look like everyone else’s - they’re the ones that couldn’t belong to anyone else.

4 THINGS I’LL ALWAYS CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING A PAINT COLOUR

Choosing a paint colour might seem like the starting point… but for me, it’s actually much further down the list.

1. HOW DO YOU WANT THE ROOM TO FEEL?
Calm and cosy? Light and uplifting? Warm and cocooning? Fresh and energising? This should influence all of your decisions, not just colour.

2. WHAT NATURAL LIGHT DOES THE ROOM GET?
Which direction does the room face? When does the sun hit it? Is the light bright, soft, warm or cool? Colour can look completely different depending on the light in the room, so this is a big one.

3. WHAT ELSE IS GOING INTO THE ROOM?
Flooring, furniture, fabrics, artwork, worktops, tiles, curtains… Paint needs to work with these elements rather than being chosen in isolation. I always look at the whole scheme before settling on a colour.

4. HOW DO YOU WANT THE ROOM TO CONNECT WITH THE REST OF THE HOME?
I’ll consider the colours and materials in adjoining spaces and how you move from one room to the next. The aim isn’t for every room to match - it’s about creating a home that feels considered and connected.

So yes, choosing the paint colour matters… but it’s rarely where I start. The right colour is the one that works with the light, mood, materials and overall feel of your home.

COMPLETED PROJECT

WARM + INVITING LIVING ROOM

This living room has been completely transformed.
The brief was to create a space that feels warm, relaxed and somewhere the homeowners naturally want to retreat to at the end of the day. We embraced richer, earthy tones - especially forest green - to create a calm, cocooning atmosphere that’s perfect for slowing down.

One of my favourite features is the bespoke joinery design in collaboration with Silva Furniture It gives the vinyl collection, record player, books and treasured objects a dedicated home, making the room feel beautifully organised while adding plenty of personality.

Because the living room connects directly to the kitchen and entrance hall, it was important that each space felt connected without losing its own identity. Using complimentary colours and materials creates a natural flow through the home, while allowing every room to serve its own purpose.

Now it’s a space that’s perfect for putting on a record, curling up with a book, settling in for a film, or simply taking a moment to switch off.

HELO LIFE LATELY

I’ve been a little quiet on the socials recently and I’m going to be honest my socials haven’t been high on the agenda (sorry!) and sometimes I genuinely don’t have much to say 😂
