We’re delighted to welcome The Happy Brolly Movement. They’re a UK-based small business brightening dull and rainy days with their colourful, playful umbrellas. With a focus on sustainable materials, durability and doing good for both people and the planet, these happy brollies are all about embracing the outdoors, having fun and finding a little joy, whatever the weather!

Atelier & Co will be bringing their gorgeous, slow-crafted natural skincare and botanical rituals to The Nursery.
Wander amongst plants and flowers, breathe in the countryside air, and discover skincare made with intention — from Nordic botanicals to circular ingredients that give back to the earth.
Come by, try their creations, and take a moment for yourself. Slow beauty, made in Lancashire.

End-of-season sale…

We’re excited to announce that from today until the end of October, we have 50% off a HUGE number of plants…

Every year, as the season comes to a close, our team gather up the plants that have spent the summer in the Frameyard and take them back into production.

Not because they’re finished or no good, quite the opposite.

Chris and the growing team repot them, divide them, tend to them and then tuck them away for the winter, ready to grow on and return to the Nursery looking their very best next season. It’s no mean feat!

However, this year, things are a little different…

We’ve excitedly opened a brand-new growing field area, which is home to a large amount of newly potted stock, some of which we haven’t grown before! Our usual growing field needs some well needed TLC, and so just for this year, we’re giving you the chance to take home the plants we would usually spend the winter looking after in that area — with 50% off.

These aren’t sad, tired or unwanted plants. They’ve been grown right here at Holden Clough, outside in the Ribble Valley elements, without polytunnels and under the watchful eye of our experienced growing team. There is everything from Salvia, Gaura, Evergreens, Grasses and Hydrangeas to show pots and even Topiary and Yew balls.

Some may simply have finished flowering for the year, some are even in bud / flower now, but underneath the soil, there are strong, healthy and hardy roots just waiting for their next chapter.
Plus…as we always say, Autumn is the perfect time to plant!

So, pop in, grab some bargains, get them out of their pots and into the ground now. They can then spend the winter quietly settling in and establishing their roots. Come spring, you’ll be rewarded with bigger, stronger and hardier plants, for half the price.

So, if you’ve got a spot or a whole area waiting for something new, this might be the year to fill it. You’ll find all these plants in one area, behind the tree line / wall at the back of the nursery – just follow the signs.

all showcasing their talents through an array of stunning handmade products from handmade jewellery, illustrative art & prints, macrame hangers and quirky ceramics…to gorgeous candles & wax melts, delicious, sweet treats and desserts, natural cosmetics & skincare, and handcrafted gifts & décor.

At the Nursery, we also have lots of Autumnal, Halloween goodies, 50% off many plants & shrubs and…our Spring bulbs are now in!

A little bit of magic has arrived at Holden Clough…

Today, we welcome the Autumn Equinox — the moment when summer begins to give way to autumn, and when we launch our new seasonal fairy trail …

Collect at clue sheet at the entrance and wander through the grounds as you follow the trail. Hidden amongst the plants, trees, nooks and crannies of the nursery, a little fairy world is waiting to be discovered.

Created by the local, talented Carla Gebhard, the new Fairy Trail is an invitation to slow down, explore and take in the surroundings.

A place for little ones to search, discover and wonder — and perhaps for the grown-ups to feel a little bit of fairy magic too.

Each clue sheet also comes with a fairy colouring sheet, and if you hand this in at the till, it will be entered into our fairy colouring competition with the chance to win an A5 fairy print. (Closes 1.11.26)

Carla has a small shop and studio based in the beautiful Forest of Bowland and specialises in prints and greeting cards inspired by animals, nature and all things whimsical. Not only do we now stock them – we adore them, and we know you will too, whatever age!

This Sunday the 20th of September...

We are joined by the wonderful Nutritional Beauty, one of our favourite local artisans.

You’ll see Rachel and her goodies as you walk into The Glasshouse entrance and believe me, you’ll want to stop to check out what she makes.

She creates gorgeous skincare products that are not just handmade, but all natural too. From balms, butters, creams and oils to natural candles and melts, men’s skincare and even dried flower wreaths. We hope you’ll pop in and come and support her!

Our Autumn displays have also just been done by our retail team, just a couple of sneak peek pictures, for now!

As the summer winds down...

We head towards a new season that's somewhat calmer and quieter in terms of plans. The Children are back at school, and the weather is becoming much cooler, meaning we may be inside more...

Why not join us to get creative and learn something new with one of our many crafty workshops. Our artisan markets are also back this month, and the popular Flaming Firepits event is also back this October...

It may feel like summer is over…

But in the plant world, a whole new season is about to begin…

Autumn is the best time to plant. Here’s why;

🌱 The soil is still warm from summer, helping plants establish roots quickly.
🌱 There’s more natural rainfall – wetter conditions mean less watering.
🌱 It’s the best time to establish roots – plants can develop strong root systems before spring growth begins.
🌱 Less stress – cooler temperatures reduce the risk of plants drying out or becoming heat-stressed.
🌱 Better growth next spring – well-established plants are ready to burst into growth as temperatures rise.
🌱 Ideal for trees, shrubs & perennials – particularly good for planting bare-root and container-grown plants.
🌱 Better value – planting smaller plants or bulbs that cost less now, but will be bigger and more established in Spring, will save you money, plus, we have many plants that are 50% off now.
🌱 Autumn planting also supports wildlife – it helps create valuable habitats for insects and other garden wildlife over winter.

We are still expecting some sunny September days, so our time in the garden is certainly not over yet! Fill a gap, add some colour or interest, or plant up a whole new area…

With backgrounds in design, photography, blacksmithing and writing, and a love for natural materials, they combine the warmth and authenticity of nature with the precision of laser design, cutting and engraving.

As we get planning our final flower of the year, Harrogate, we wanted to share our news about Southport Flower Show, that we attended recently!

Our team once again did an incredible job of framing our beloved Austin Mini van, that was sitting on a ‘driveway’, with a fantastic display of plants.

The cloud pruned tree, ornate rockery and Japanese scheme got much accolade, as did the English scheme on the left that included an obelisk where people wrote wonderful memories of their own experience/s with an Austin Mini. The wild and colourful Meadow scheme at the front included a large beehive pot, and a cute bench – which was sat on by non-other that Mr Adam Frost of Gardener’s World! Our team were also delighted when they were visited by Joe Swift, of Gardener’s World, too!

This will be the last year we use our Austin in our shows, as we have more big ideas for next year, because Holden Clough will be 100 years old!

Thank you to Southport Flower show for giving us a large gold medal for the display, as well as the trophy for the finest display of trees and shrubs in the show, too. It makes all the hard work that our team put in, worthwhile.

Thanks to every single person that visited us and bought plants or booked garden consultations with John and, as always, none of this would be remotely possible without our amazing team. Truly grateful for their hard work and continuous efforts.

Next stop…Harrogate Flower Show on the 18th-20th September. We hope to see you there, or that you’ll visit the nursery soon to redeem your free plant vouchers from other shows…
