⏳ JUST OVER 20 MINUTES TO GO!

After a seriously long print, we’re almost there.

The newly improved Royal Engineers Queen’s Crown cap badge is now in its final few layers, and the complete design has really come together.

From the St Edward’s Crown and central E II R Royal Cypher through to the Garter, wreath and surrounding lettering, all of that intricate detail is now fully visible — and the refinements made to the model have made a real difference to the finished appearance.

It’s always a good feeling watching a print of this size finally reach the end, especially after so many hours on the machine.

Just over 20 minutes separates this one from the build plate now. 👀🔥

Then it’s time for the first proper look at the finished badge.

This one is now properly entering the final stretch.

Our newly improved Royal Engineers Queen’s Crown cap badge has been building steadily through the day, and with only 9 hours left on the print, the full design is now becoming much easier to appreciate.

The crown, central E II R cypher, Garter, wreath and surrounding detail are all standing out brilliantly, and the refinements made to the model are already showing exactly where we wanted them to.

These larger, more intricate badges take some serious printer time, but watching all that detail gradually emerge makes it worth it.

The St Edward’s Crown, E II R Royal Cypher, Garter, wreath and lettering are all beginning to reveal themselves — and so far, the improvements we made to the design are translating brilliantly onto the printer. 👀

For more than eight decades, the Royal Air Force Regiment has stood at the forefront of protecting RAF personnel, aircraft, airfields and operations around the world.

From its creation during the Second World War to modern operations across the globe, generations of RAF Regiment Gunners have carried forward a distinctive fighting tradition within the Royal Air Force.

We’re pleased to now have both King’s Crown and Queen’s Crown versions of the Royal Air Force Regiment badge available, alongside matching display frames from Precision Military Emblems.

✈️ THE FORMATION OF THE RAF REGIMENT

The Royal Air Force Regiment was established by Royal Warrant during the Second World War, with existing RAF airfield defence squadrons and flights incorporated into the new Regiment with effect from 1 February 1942.

The war had demonstrated just how vulnerable operational airfields could be to attack.

The creation of a dedicated RAF ground-defence force provided the Royal Air Force with personnel specifically trained to defend its airfields, aircraft and the people required to keep air operations running.

RAF Regiment officers and Gunners were trained to operate as infantry, armoured-car crewmen and air-defence artillerymen, establishing the ground-combat role that became central to the Regiment’s identity.

⚔️ FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR TO THE MODERN ERA

The RAF Regiment’s story did not end with the Second World War.

As the Royal Air Force evolved, so did the Regiment.

RAF Regiment Gunners have subsequently served on operations around the world, including the Falklands, Balkans, Sierra Leone, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan, while continuing to provide Force Protection for RAF assets deployed overseas.

Today, the Regiment continues its specialist ground-combat and Force Protection role in support of Royal Air Force operations.

🎖️ THE ROYAL AIR FORCE REGIMENT BADGE

The RAF Regiment badge is instantly recognisable and reflects the Regiment’s unique position as the Royal Air Force’s ground fighting force.

At its centre are the distinctive crossed rifles, surrounded by the Astral Crown — a device with a long association with the Royal Air Force.

The surrounding design carries the title:

ROYAL AIR FORCE REGIMENT

And beneath the badge sits the Regiment’s own motto:

PER ARDUA

Meaning:

“THROUGH ADVERSITY”

Importantly, this is the specific motto of the Royal Air Force Regiment, distinct from the wider Royal Air Force motto Per Ardua ad Astra — “Through Adversity to the Stars.”

👑 QUEEN’S CROWN — AN ERA OF RAF REGIMENT SERVICE

For most of the Regiment’s modern history, its insignia was worn during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

RAF insignia of that era incorporated St Edward’s Crown, making the Queen’s Crown version particularly significant for the generations of RAF Regiment Gunners who served during Her Late Majesty’s 70-year reign.

From the Cold War through to the Falklands, the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan and numerous deployments around the world, the Queen’s Crown represents an enormous period of RAF Regiment history.

👑 KING’S CROWN — A NEW CHAPTER

Following the accession of King Charles III, RAF insignia began transitioning to reflect the new Sovereign.

The King personally selected the Tudor Crown to represent his sovereignty on RAF insignia, creating the King’s Crown pattern now associated with the new era.

Having both versions available allows RAF Regiment service and heritage from different periods to be represented appropriately.

Whether your service was beneath the Queen’s Crown, the King’s Crown, or you simply have a connection with the Regiment and its history, there is now a version to represent that heritage.

👑 RAF REGIMENT KING’S CROWN CAP BADGE – JUST OVER AN HOUR TO GO 👑

Just over an hour remaining on the RAF Regiment King’s Crown cap badge now, and it’s looking excellent.

At this stage, the vast majority of the badge is complete, with the Tudor Crown now nearly finished and the final details continuing to build.

The surrounding laurel wreath, circular ROYAL AIR FORCE REGIMENT lettering, central crossed rifles and PER ARDUA scroll are all reproducing really cleanly, and it’s great to see the work that has gone into refining this version translating so well into the physical print.

There’s only a small amount left to go now before we can see the finished badge in full.

Once complete, it will be photographed and prepared for submission to the MOD as part of the official approval process.

👑 NEW & IMPROVED ROYAL ENGINEERS CAP BADGES — KING’S & QUEEN’S CROWN 👑

Two major Royal Engineers designs are now ready for the next stage.

Our newly improved King’s Crown and Queen’s Crown Royal Engineers cap badges have both received MOD pre-approval, following a substantial amount of work refining the finer details of these particularly intricate designs.

At approximately 200 × 250 × 24 mm, these are sizeable display pieces, giving us the room needed to reproduce the complex heraldic detail of the badge cleanly in 3D.

⚙️ THE ROYAL ENGINEERS

The Royal Engineers — widely known as the Sappers — have a history stretching back more than three centuries. The Corps traces its origins to the military engineers formally organised in 1716, with the title Corps of Royal Engineers developing from the royal recognition granted to the engineers during the 18th century.

Throughout its history, the Corps has provided the British Army with an extraordinary range of military engineering capabilities, from fortifications, bridges and field engineering to demolitions, surveying, infrastructure and specialist technical support.

Its famous mottos are:

UBIQUE — “Everywhere”

and

QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT — “Where Right and Glory Lead”

👑 THE CAP BADGE

The Royal Engineers badge is one of the British Army’s most recognisable and elaborate designs.

At its centre sits the Royal Cypher of the reigning monarch, surrounded by the blue Garter carrying the inscription:

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

— the motto of the Order of the Garter, traditionally translated as “Shame on him who thinks evil of it.”

The complete design is surrounded by a richly detailed laurel wreath, with the Crown positioned prominently above and the distinctive red ROYAL ENGINEERS scroll completing the badge below.

The two versions also provide a fascinating visual record of the change of reign:

👑 Queen’s Crown version — featuring the E II R cypher of Queen Elizabeth II beneath the St Edward’s Crown.

👑 King’s Crown version — updated for the reign of King Charles III, featuring the C III R Royal Cypher and Tudor Crown pattern.

Recreating all of that in a printable 3D design means getting considerably more than just the overall silhouette right. The crown, individual pearls, Royal Cypher, Garter lettering, buckle and strap, wreath leaves, berries and lower scroll all have to remain clearly defined while working together as a single physical piece.

That is exactly what has been concentrated on with these new versions.

Just a little under 3 hours remaining on the RAF Regiment King’s Crown cap badge — and it’s looking superb.

At this stage, almost the entire design is now visible, and it’s great to see the work that has gone into refining this version finally coming together in the finished print.

The Tudor Crown, surrounding laurel wreath, circular ROYAL AIR FORCE REGIMENT lettering, central crossed rifles and PER ARDUA scroll are all reproducing really cleanly, with the finer details now fully taking shape.

There’s still a little way to go, but everything is looking very promising for the final result.

Once the print is complete, it will be photographed and prepared for submission to the MOD for the next stage of the official approval process.
