Ever touched up one tiny mark… and somehow made it MORE noticeable?

There’s a reason for it.

Once matt paint has dried, aged, been cleaned or even catches the light differently, a fresh touch up can reflect the light differently to the original paint leaving you with that obvious flashed patch.

With a standard matt, if you need to repair an area, you may get a better result by taking your fresh coat of paint right to the edges of the wall rather than just touching up one small section.

BUT… if you’re a serial toucher upper, Johnstone’s Perfect Matt could be worth the investment.

It’s designed with excellent touch up properties, helping you deal with those little scuffs and marks without having to repaint the entire wall every time.

Very handy for busy UK homes where pristine walls don’t stay pristine for long!

Even better, Johnstone’s Perfect Matt has 10% OFF this month at Decorating Centre Online.

Are you guilty of constantly touching up your walls?

My green recommendation post went down so well, I thought I might try another one! So, this time we’re talking BLUE 💙

The direction your room faces can make such a difference to how a blue looks on the walls, so these are the shades I’d reach for depending on the light you’re working with…

💙North-facing: I’d warm the blue up. North-facing light tends to be cooler, so I’ve gone for Little Greene Perpetual Blue, which has a little more warmth to stop the room feeling too cold.

💙East-facing: These rooms get lovely morning light that changes throughout the day. Laura Ashley Pale Duck Egg is a soft blue that changes beautifully along with it.

💙South-facing: This is where cooler blues can really shine! The warmer natural light balances them out, so I’ve picked Farrow & Ball Borrowed Light for a fresh, airy feel.

💙West-facing: I’d go richer and let that warm evening light do the work. Little Greene Roma has more depth and really comes into its own later in the day.

Of course, these aren’t hard and fast rules! Your windows, the amount of natural light and the other colours in the room will all make a difference, so always test your colour in the space first.

Which blue would you pick? 💙

Do dark paint colours really make a room look smaller?

It’s one of the biggest decorating worries we hear especially when you’re working with smaller rooms in UK homes.

But dark doesn’t automatically mean smaller.

Deeper colours can actually blur the edges of a room, soften corners and create a cosy, cocooning feel. What can make a space feel more chopped up is strong contrast: think dark walls against brilliant white ceilings, skirting boards and woodwork.

Instead, try taking your deeper shade across more of the room, onto the woodwork or even up onto the ceiling.

So if you’ve been avoiding that dark colour you love because your room “isn’t big enough”… you might want to think again.

Oil based vs water based paint… which one wins?

Helen & Matt have slightly different opinions on this one!

Helen prefers water based paints indoors. They’re quicker drying, easier to work with and importantly, won’t yellow over time. For exterior jobs, she’s more likely to reach for oil based when that extra toughness and durability is needed.

Matt, however, thinks oil based still has the edge on those trickier surfaces particularly very glossy finishes or furniture such as IKEA pieces where getting good adhesion can be a challenge.

So is one actually better than the other? 🤔

The answer often comes down to what you’re painting, where you’re painting it and the finish you need.

What side are you on oil based or water based? Let us know in the comments 👇

I know prep isn’t the most exciting part of decorating, but I promise it’s worth spending a little extra time on!

A few little things I’d recommend having to hand before you start:

🧽 A good filler for any holes, cracks or little imperfections. Toupret is a brand I always I reach for. There's a filler for every job.

🖐️ A sanding pad or sanding sheets to smooth everything back once your filler is completely dry. You’re looking for a nice smooth surface, not trying to sand half the wall away!

🧹 A tack cloth is really handy for picking up all that fine sanding dust before you paint. Don’t skip this bit, because you don’t want dust getting into your lovely new finish.

🖌️ The right primer if your walls need one. Bare plaster, stains and problem areas can all need slightly different prep, so don’t assume one primer does everything.

And my biggest tip? Don’t rush it. It’s always tempting to get straight to the fun bit and start painting, but a little extra time spent getting your walls right can make such a difference to the finished room.

Save this one for your next decorating project!

Such wonderful transformations from the lovely home account It just goes to show the power of paint but using the right paint for the right job is crucial.

Samantha’s previous woodwork was finished in an oil based paint so the skirtings and wood frames all had to be slightly sanded first, cleaned and then primed with Zinsser Bin Aqua.
Then all the woodwork was painted in Zinnser AllCoat Exterior Satin paint in colour NTB201.
The colour drenched ceilings and walls were painted in Leyland Hardwearing Matt paint coloured matched to shade NTB201.
The cupboard was painted in a colour matched Zinsser AllCoat Satin to NTB244 and this has brought warmth and depth to the landing.

What do you think of these transformations?

One of those decorating products you don’t realise you need… until you use it!

Meet CoverMasq Tape & Drape a simple way to protect your home from paint splashes, drips and overspray while you decorate.

The clever bit? The masking tape is already attached to the protective sheeting, so there’s no wrestling with separate tape and dust sheets.

Simply tape it into position and unfold the sheet to protect:

✔️ Floors & skirting areas
✔️ Sofas and furniture
✔️ Tables and worktops
✔️ Windows, doors and larger areas

The taped edge helps create a secure seal and keeps the protective sheet in place while you work meaning less mess to deal with when the decorating is finished!

Available in 4 sizes, suitable for interior and exterior use and can be left in place for up to 90 days.

Protect. Paint. Peel away. Done. 👌

Would this make your next decorating job easier?

If you’ve got a busy home, little ones, pets, or even just a hallway that seems to pick up every mark, going a standard matt isn’t always the most practical choice.

That’s why I really rate paints like Johnstone’s Cleanable Matt. You still get that lovely matt finish we all love, but you’ve got the reassurance that when life happens, you can actually clean your walls without worrying about ruining the finish.

My little tip would be to think about how you use the room, not just how you want it to look. A more durable paint might cost a little more initially, but in those hardworking areas it can save you having to constantly touch up or repaint.

And because we can colour match it into thousands of shades, you don’t have to choose between the colour you love and a more practical finish. 🙌

Would you use a cleanable matt in your home?
