This week is Anaphylaxis Awareness Week. Anaphylaxis is a serious and life-threatening allergic reaction which usually occurs within few seconds or minutes of exposure to allergic substances.
The 14 regulated allergens include the foods that pose the greatest risk of anaphylaxis to people in the UK. Food businesses must inform you if they use any of these 14 allergens as ingredients in the food and drink they provide:
▶️ celery
▶️ cereals containing gluten (such as barley and oats)
▶️ crustaceans (such as prawns, crabs and lobsters)
▶️ eggs
▶️ fish
▶️ lupin
▶️ milk
▶️ molluscs (such as mussels and oysters)
▶️ mustard
▶️ peanuts
▶️ sesame
▶️ soybeans
▶️ sulphur dioxide and sulphites (at a concentration of more than ten parts per million)
▶️ tree nuts (such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, pistachios and macadamia nuts)
If you have an allergy or intolerance, remember to communicate with staff when eating out. For more information about food hypersensitivity, visit our website: https://www.food.gov.uk/safety-hygiene/food-allergy-and-intolerance
