My favourite type of funeral arrangement is the one where the family can share the flowers after the ceremony. What better way to enjoy the flowers for the longest time than by including potted plants?

The idea of combining potted plants with cut flowers has Victorian roots — though the term 'Pot-et-Fleur' itself wasn't coined until 1960. This arrangement was created in four separate modules. Three of the four modules are being planted in family gardens and the fourth will be arranged in a pot so that it can be moved when required.

I have lived in Derby for nearly 40 years but have only just discovered https://www.facebook.com/hudsonspc who have the most amazing selection of beautiful plants. I was delighted to have the excuse to pay another visit (who really needs an excuse to go to a garden centre?) and buy the plants for this arrangement - topped up with foliage and flowers from my garden.

Would you want the flowers shared after your funeral?

The rose is the world’s most popular cut flower. It’s also one of the most carbon-heavy. 🌹
A single stem flown in from Kenya. The heated greenhouses, the pesticides, the refrigerated journey, the plastic. All for a flower that lives a few hours at a funeral.
The rose doesn’t have to disappear. But there are gentler, British-grown alternatives — seasonal, beautiful, and a fraction of the footprint.
Check out the reel to see some of my favs 🌿

What does "locally grown" really mean when it comes to my funeral flowers?

It's more than a buzzword. A locally grown stem hasn't flown across the world or sat in cold storage for weeks. Its been grown right here in Littleover in the suburbs of Derby. Not five thousand miles away.

That's the difference with locally grown funeral flowers — stems that are fresh and full. But it's more than freshness. It's seasonality. It's story — something a grieving family can hold onto. It's backing small British growers, like me, doing things properly.

Would it change anything to know your flowers were grown just down the road?

A bit more information detailing the usual journey a flower makes and why choosing a more sustainable option matters.

I'm always banging on about 'sustainable funeral flowers' but I've come to the conclusion that for some people this phrase is meaningless. Here's a short summary of what I think makes a flower sustainable and how this relates to funeral flowers. Would be interested to know if you agree with me.

I don't have a large area for growing flowers and most of what I grow is used for creating planet-friendly funeral flowers. However, in the warmer months I do have surplus flowers that I can sell. The best thing about this photo? The image was taken in front of the very bed of anemones that I cut flowers from. These cans are cut to order and are only available for collection, so just DM if you'd like one. How's that for a low carbon-footprint?

These cans are wrapped in Posy Patch paper and each week, I pick the freshest and most vibrant flowers to fill the cans, so you can always expect something new and beautiful that’ll brighten up your day! But here’s a little heads up: these flowers are cut to order, so you’ll need to order at least the day before you want them. Remember though, you can only pick them up from Littleover. Send me a DM now to get your hands on a can of seasonal loveliness.

Definitely the right time of year to reshare my all-time favourite reel. I periodically do the as set by Georgie Newbery of and clearly had too much time on my hands when I created this little reel. Have you found a creative way to use small Spring flowers?

It may seem that it would be difficult to provide funeral flowers all year round but even in Winter there is plenty of foliage to use in the garden and seasonal British flowers are always available from wholesalers.

There is so much contentment to be had from providing funeral flowers, especially when you get to hear about the person the flowers are for and then receive wonderful comments about how well the flowers were received.
