Branches, berries and autumn treasures… autumn has arrived! 🍂

From a simple framework of freshly cut branches to an autumn doorway filled with colour, texture and seasonal charm.

I used a mix of faux pumpkins and flowers, along with berries, foliage and other treasures from my garden and the hedgerow.

With a little imagination, these simple seasonal finds came together to create a warm and welcoming autumn display.

What do you think of our autumn welcome?

From garden to bouquet 🌸

A lovely autumnal weekend flower workshop sharing the art of making a spiral hand-tied bouquet, using beautiful seasonal dahlias from my cutting garden.

We began in the garden, choosing and cutting our flowers, before heading into the Flower Barn to learn how to condition, select and arrange our stems.

The spiral technique can seem a little daunting at first, but once you understand how and why it works, it all starts to fall into place!

And that’s what I love about teaching. It’s not simply about going home with a beautiful bouquet, but understanding the techniques so you can create your own again and again.

A gorgeous morning of flowers, creativity and learning.

A little AI magic! 👰‍♀️😂

I recently made this bridal bouquet for a wedding and absolutely loved how it turned out.

Unfortunately, the photographs I took afterwards didn’t quite do the occasion justice!

So, just for a bit of fun, I asked AI to put me in a wedding dress.

Well, the first attempt was rather like the Bride of Frankenstein 😂

A few adjustments later, including a request for a less lined face, and here we are!

I may well be in the market for a face transplant when they become available, but for now AI will do nicely! 🤣

The bouquet, however, needed no such adjustments or improvements! 💐

It’s 100% real, made by me, with beautiful fresh flowers, many gathered from my own cutting garden.

Only the bride has had a little digital assistance! 😂

A little Sunday morning read 🌸

I may have gone slightly dahlia mad this year… propagation got rather out of hand, five unexpected planters appeared and there has been rather more yellow than I bargained for. 😅

Plus a little on pinching, cutting — and why I ended up dancing with my dahlias.

And there’s still one mystery left to solve… 🌼

Waltzing through a season that hasn’t quite gone to plan.

Well, this week’s Substack took a rather unexpected turn… 😅

From sustainable funeral flowers to walking 114 km of the Camino, flower crowns, daughters, mountains and my rather elaborate instructions for my eventual send-off.

There is a thread running through it. I promise. 😂🌸

Up, Up and Away is this week’s Sunday read.

Out and About: This lovely little bumblebee mistook my UV sleeve for the real thing and settled quite happily on one of the flowers.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him he’d been duped by a bit of printed fabric.

Another tiny encounter that made me stop, smile and notice what was happening around me.

Sometimes it’s the smallest moments in an ordinary day that bring the most delight.

Our pressed flower workshops are proving rather popular.

Pressed flower art feels like a natural extension of the preservation work I have been doing for some time. Taking flowers beyond their relatively fleeting life in the garden and finding another way to enjoy them.

We start with flowers and foliage, including seasonal material from my own cutting garden, learn about pressing and preserving them, and then use an assortment of already pressed botanicals to create individual framed. 💐

Pressed Flower Art Workshops are now available at my Faringdon and Didcot studios.

I’ve started writing again 🌸

After rather a long break from my Substack, I’m back in the cutting garden — although this summer the garden seems determined to run to its own timetable.

Dahlias, a hen party, some flowers I definitely DID NOT order and a compost heap waiting patiently in the wings…
