October is ADHD Awareness Month 🧡
And we need to talk about more than being a bit forgetful, talking too much, doing daft impulsive s**t infront of your friends and getting ‘distracted by squirrels’. God I hate that saying 🙄
Because ADHD isn’t always fun or quirky. It can be absolutely debilitating. A lot of the time, especially without the right support.
It’s wanting desperately to do something, even something small and still finding it impossible to start. Feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks. Being exhausted from trying to keep up, then feeling guilty because we think we should have done more. Oh and the shame. OMG the shame 🤦🏻♀️
For those of us diagnosed a bit later in life, there can be decades of wondering why everything feels so hard. Watching other people seemingly drift through life while we’re wrestling ours into submission with endless reminders, lost lists and constant breakdowns.
Then comes the diagnosis. The relief. The answers. And sometimes the grief for the younger version of us who deserved patience and understanding instead of being called lazy, difficult or “too much”.
To those people: you are heard. You are seen. There’s way more of us than we ever imagined. You deserved support then, and you deserve it now. 🧡
Our hope is that continued research, better understanding and earlier support mean the next generation (and our kids) won’t have to spend their first 30-odd years believing they’re failing at being a human being.
But there can be so much joy in the way our brains work, too.
With the right support, we can thrive. Many of us are wonderfully creative, curious, resourceful and full of ideas. We feel deeply, care fiercely and bring enormous empathy and enthusiasm to the things and people we love.
Our mind, space (and craft sheds) are a mess but our hearts are huge.
Can we get the pots done? Debatable.
Put the laundry away? Might manage it once a month.
Keep track of our belongings? Everything needs to be chained to us.
But when hyperfocus lands on something we REALLY want to do? Mountains will be moved. Possibly overnight. With no lunch, a cold cup of tea and a completely unnecessary new business idea thrown in. 😆
That focus can be incredible. It can also mean forgetting we’re humans who need food, sleep and a wee 🙈
We can achieve amazing things and still struggle with everyday life. One doesn’t cancel out the other and it’s taken me 33 years to realise this.
So this month, let’s make room for the whole picture. The creativity, the chaos, the burnout and exhaustion and the endless possibilities.
And to our fellow ADHD brains: we deserve compassion on the mountain-moving days AND the days when getting dressed is the mountain. 🧡
**Sharing a vulnerable photo of the current state that is my trashed workspace after a super busy week being fixated on my work. (Obviously I didn’t finish painting it 🥴 whoever would 🤣)
Yes it looks like a bombs hit it. Because it has. I AM THE BOMB! 💣🤣
