When I met my husband he lived in communist Poland in a flat with no fridge, milk came in brown glass litre bottles, eggs in brown paper bags and pans were all enamel. He kept it all on the windowsill, this was probably March 1988, it was pretty depressing and grey but the people were so friendly and generous .
