More than five years ago I decorated some pine cones and thought I might make a wreath.
Shortly after I thought… hang on maybe this could become a hobby. Maybe I could even make some money from it!
I remember creating my logo and setting up my Etsy shop and trying to figure everything out. It was all a bit of a fog. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing but I was SO excited!
Then came my first wholesale order of dried and preserved flowers. I spent what felt like a fortune at the time and when the delivery arrived our home was suddenly full of boxes. It smelt of dried barley and oats and preserved eucalyptus and probably a little bit of madness. 😂
Of course I ordered all sorts of unnecessary things too because oh I like that… and that… and that! I had no idea what I actually needed.
One thing I will say is that finding answers to all my questions five years ago was SO much harder than it is today when AI can help you figure out almost anything.
And then came my first wreath sale. Followed by my first bouquet sale.
It was bloody amazing!
Looking back now I can see just how overly excited clueless naive and full of energy I was. I was driven by this idea of starting my own business and somehow making a living from creating things I loved.
But let’s be honest. It’s not all fairies and daisies. Not even close. This is 24/7 when you can’t switch off. There are days when you feel completely alone and wonder whether anyone wants what you create. There are days when you think you need to get a proper job. There are days when you wonder what the point of all this is…
I can be incredibly critical of my own work and sometimes I look back at my early creations and feel a little embarrassed. But someone recently said something to me that really stuck:
You learn to create you choose to create and you become objective about your own development and evolution.
I know there are florists who follow every floristry rule in the book and I respect that. But I have always chosen to create in my own way rather than letting theory dictate everything I do. I create what feels right to me and put it out into the world and let my customers decide.
And that’s the beauty of creating. We don’t all have to create the same way.
Five years on I cannot imagine this journey without my incredibly loving partner and my family and friends and of course YOU.
Every single customer who has chosen to spend their hard-earned money on my work has helped me get to where I am today. And those of you who have come back not just once but twice or ten times or even twenty times… you have no idea how much that means to me.
Without you I would be nowhere. My wreaths might still be hanging around our own home and I would simply be the person who bought far too many dried flowers! 😂
THANK YOU for buying my creations and supporting my little business and recommending me to others and coming back for more and believing in what I do even when I was still figuring it all out.
I am so so bloody grateful.
Here’s to five-plus years of creating and learning and making mistakes and growing and doing things my own way…
