Every year I wait impatiently for the roses… ✨

… and this week, the first blooms have finally begun to open

The old English-style roses in my Yorkshire Wolds cutting garden are among my favourite flowers to grow. Wonderfully fragrant, beautifully ruffled, and full of character, they are grown especially for my wedding work.

One of my favourite pieces of rose folklore is the phrase sub rosa, or “under the rose”. In medieval times, a rose was a symbol of secrecy, trust and confidence. Anything discussed beneath it was expected to remain private.

It seems rather lovely that a flower so often associated with romance should also represent quiet promises and shared confidences 💕

For now, I’m simply enjoying watching these first beautiful blooms unfold in the garden…

The roses featured in these photographs are:

🪴Roald Dahl

🪴Desdemona

🪴Queen of Sweden

- three beautiful David Austin roses that I grow for their wonderful fragrance, oh so romantic character and timeless beauty

Bliss!

A little bit of Friday joy!

Some sweet little miniature apothecary vases filled with an exuberant mix of sweet rocket, apple mint, geums, corn cockle, philadelphus, variegated pittosporum, corn flowers, meadow buttercups, quaking grass & plum thistles…

…destined for the wonderfully convivial tables of Stella's Larder Driffield for their Social this weekend 🎉

I absolutely adore putting together these little vase arrangements for the Stella’s Socials… each one a carefully selected seasonal gathering of flowers and foliage from our Yorkshire Wolds cutting garden 🌿

Every stem is chosen with care, creating something natural, characterful, and ever-changing through the seasons - a little reflection of Stella’s beautifully curated wines, local beers, small plates, and thoughtful snacks. Flowers and good food always seem to belong together somehow✨

Hope you have a super weekend.

A huge thank you to the wonderful ladies of the Driffield Afternoon W.I. for such a warm welcome at your meeting today 🌸

It was such a joy to share a floristry talk and demonstration all about seasonal flowers, flower folklore, and the meanings and symbolism hidden within some of our favourite blooms 🌿

From old traditions and botanical stories to the language of flowers, it made for such a lovely afternoon of flowers, conversation, and laughter.

After a little hiatus whilst recovering from shingles (and a few other health wobbles along the way), this lovely lot truly cheered me up more than they probably realise 🌷

Thank you again for having me, and for sending me home smiling.

Happy May Day ✨

A celebration of the fullness of spring…

🌸 Ruffled ranunculus

All grown here in our Hutton Cranswick cutting garden, gathered at just the right moment so they gently unfurl in your vase at home…

Tulips in the spring light… ✨

Layer upon layer of soft ruffled petals, opening gently as the day warms. These have been catching the morning sun in the cottage garden this week - each one a little different, each one quietly showy in its own unique way. I just can’t stop gazing at them…

A lovely little curiosity- tulips continue to grow even after they’ve been cut. You might notice them stretching and reaching in the vase, turning towards the light as the days go on. Still very much alive, still moving….

Grown slowly here in our Yorkshire Wolds cutting patch… and gathered at just the right moment, so they unfurl gently in the vase once home on your kitchen table 💕

And very soon… a few of these will be making their way to the Flower Shed honesty box 🤍

A wedding bouquet grown and gathered here in the Yorkshire Wolds…

…for a beautiful Beverley bride.

Grown in my cutting garden here in the Yorkshire Wolds and arranged by me, using seasonal flowers at their very best.

This abundant spring bridal bouquet included:

Speciality double and parrot tulips, ranunculus and anemones, spirea “bridal wreath”, wallflowers, tanacetum, camassia, muscari and scented narcissi.

And those final details - cherry blossom, emerging hawthorn buds and silver birch catkins…

…the kind of ingredients that can only be gathered for a brief moment in the season. Natural, romantic, and completely of this time of year 🤍

It was such a joy to create S & M’s wedding flowers. Wishing them every happiness in their married life together, and heartfelt thanks for trusting me with such an important part of their day.

✨ A curious chapter in tulip history… ✨

There was a time when tulips stirred something close to obsession…

In the 1630s, during Tulip Mania, the Netherlands was captivated by these flamed and feathered blooms. Rare, streaked bulbs were traded like treasures, some changing hands for astonishing sums, the equivalent of many thousands of pounds today.

The fascination soon reached Britain, where collectors fell for unusual and “broken” tulips… a passion that shaped our lasting love of these spring flowers 🌷

It’s generally considered to have been the very first recorded speculative bubble in history.

And then… almost overnight… it ended. The bubble burst. Those tremendously high prices were simply unattainable.

A brief, brilliant frenzy centred on a flower.

And still… we are captivated.

What do you think? Are you a captivated tulip lover like me? ☺️

These might just be the most fragrant flowers in the cutting garden right now…

This week, I’ve started picking the first narcissi ‘Bridal Crown’ from the patch and they really are something special ✨

Beautiful clusters of soft, ruffled blooms. Creamy white with a gentle glow, and that wonderful fragrance…

… rich notes of vanilla, honey and pear drops (if you can imagine that heady combination!)

They’re an heirloom variety from the mid 1940s, prized for their soft beauty and rich perfume. Perhaps it’s my history and heritage background, but I’m always most captivated by blooms with a sense of the past.

Grown slowly, without chemicals, here on our Yorkshire Wolds cutting garden - ready to be breathed in and remembered 🤍
