Autumn is the time when the world of interiors launches new collections of paints, fabrics, trimmings and wallpapers. And nothing is more fun than looking through the pattern books and samples from my favourite suppliers.

If you're interested in finding out more, I'm sharing my favourites in my next newsletter. So keep an eye on your inbox or sign up: http://eepurl.com/IqOs5

Plain or patterned? It's the question every fabric decision comes down to in the end.

Some people go straight for pattern, the bolder the better. Others reach for plains every time. And honestly? Both can work beautifully.

But whether you're firmly in one camp or still torn, a few guiding principles can make all the difference between a scheme you love for years and one that starts to feel like a mistake by year two.

Which camp are you in?

How high can you go? Over 4 metres in this case!

These curtains were fitted in one of Edinburgh's former Victorian era hospitals. Very tall windows and the quirky placement of a supporting beam made it tricky to install a curtain pole.

Fortunately The Bradley Collection had the answer with a bespoke ceiling bracket. And my curtain fitter has a good head for heights at the top of a scaffolding tower!

Motorised curtains and blinds – surely that's a sleek, contemporary thing? Not necessarily.

Period homes are often where they make the most sense. Think high ceilings, large bay windows, skylights, light-filled stairwells – all the architectural features that make a beautiful Georgian or Victorian home a little trickier to manage day to day. That's exactly where motorisation earns its keep, quietly and discreetly, without compromising your home's character.

On my blog, I explore how motorised curtains and blinds work in both modern and period properties, what makes them worth considering, and how to get the most from them.

Ever picked a paint colour or fabric you loved in the shop, only to find it looks completely different at home?

You're not alone – and no, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. It's the light.

The same colour can look completely different depending on the time of day, the season, the room, and even which part of the country you're in.

In Scotland, that matters more than most places – which is exactly why generic colour advice so often falls flat.

After years of working with homes across Scotland (and plenty of trial and error in my own), I've put together everything I know about choosing colours that actually work in Scottish light.
