Why do we sometimes say yes to one animal and no to another?
The ONLY reason we ever do this is because we don't have the facilities available for the animal we've said no to.
Lately we've taken in an awful lot of young pigeons (52 in the last five weeks to be exact!). While a small number of these have either died or had to be euthanased, the vast majority are still with us and doing very well! However, rearing this number of birds obviously takes up a lot of time and space.
We've essentially got a pigeon conveyor belt system going on! So when one part of the system stops, the whole system does. Currently, with the weather as it is, we can't release birds. It would simply be unfair.
So we're at a bit of a standstill. This means our teenagers can't move into an aviary yet, our toddlers can't move into teenager space and our tiny babies can't move into toddler space. This isn't a problem for the birds, they're all happy, well fed and enriched. But it does stop us taking in more.
It's essential we don't overload the system because that's when patient care becomes compromised.
We hope you understand and are reassured that if we turn an animal away, it's purely because of lack of resources and never, ever because we feel negatively about a species.
