Meet Tricia Thom:
My work takes references from my love of a Japanese aesthetic. For me, teapots and moon jars are symbols of community and ritual. I work in porcelain on the wheel, seeking to express the fine surface and translucency of the material through simple, balanced forms. Some surfaces are treated with bold calligraphic brush marks and stripes, contrasting with a conformity of form. More recent work has explored the use of ash glazes, bronze/golds reds, focussing on the moon jar form and introducing a more varied approach to surfaces, allowing for a play on groupings and juxtapositions of pieces.

I love or when a plan comes together, but sometimes, it just doesn’t!! Starting BIG for 2024 and working on further refining those round forms. It’s good to get back into the flow after the festive break.

New camera! Experimenting with depth of field focus. Definitely better quality pics than old iPhone. These pots are from last glaze firing of the year and some deposited at to catch the Xmas shopping.

Xmassy!

"I work predominantly in porcelain on the wheel. Some surfaces are punctuated rhythmically inside and out, expressing the fine translucency of the material, others are treated with bold, calligraphic brush strokes and stripes which contrast with the conformity of form." Tricia Thom

Tricia Thom finds meaning and significance in both teapots and moon jars, seeing them as representations of community and tradition. The use of bold brush strokes and circular shapes creates a strong impact when they are displayed together.

Getting the bigger pieces made for . I love how skills and approaches evolve with repetition. in two parts but manipulating form on wheel after joining means catching it at exactly the right time. Too soft, it collapses, too firm, the shape can’t be pushed out from within like this one…where the throwing lines are exaggerated and an inner tension is possible. I’m embracing the throwing lines, they give more fluidity to the form.
