We recently carried out the manufacture and installation of bespoke 6 over 1, 70/30 split spiral balance sash & case windows, replacing the existing steel single glazed frames with new energy efficient double glazed units while manufacturing the new window layout to tie in seamlessly with the existing character and appearance of the rest of the building.

Our new spiral balance sash windows combine traditional heritage styling with modern performance, offering smooth operation, improved insulation.

Bespoke FD60 double fire door set manufactured and installed to replace existing doors damaged by a leaking roof — all while matching the original style.

• 44mm x 145mm meranti mahogany frame with matching mirante stops, facings & skirting blocks to match existing.
• 54mm thick flush oak doors with 60-minute fire-rated Georgian polished plate glass
• 60-minute rated glazing system with intumescent tapes & beading
• 60 Minute Fire & smoke seals
• 54mm solid satin aluminium edge protection (also 60-minute fire-rated) for durability
• Custom made satin aluminium kick plates & finger plates
• Frame anchored into walls and sealed with fire-rated expanding foam

Back on site today at the University of Edinburgh Faraday Building carrying out the installation of approximately 200 sandblasted manifestation dots to all glazing.

Edinburgh university, King’s buildings, Faraday building. 🔨

We recently carried out the removal of old timber door and frame screens that had suffered significant deterioration, including cracked and damaged glazing and extensive timber rot. The existing units were carefully stripped out and replaced with new custom-made aluminium frames and doors, finished in a durable powder-coated anthracite grey for a modern and long-lasting finish.

The new installation features double-glazed units with soft-coat Low-E glass to improve thermal performance and efficiency. For security and access control, the doors were fitted with Adams Rite Mechanical Lock hardware along with a wired Adams Rite Electric Strike, allowing push-button or swipe-card entry.

Once all electrical works are completed, the system will provide full seamless functionality, including electronic opening arms on the disabled access side to ensure safe and convenient entry for all users.

From initial strip-out to full completion in just 2.5 days, delivering a fast turnaround while maintaining a high-quality finish.

🔥 Restoring an Edinburgh Icon – The Elephant House 🐘
📍 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh

We recently completed essential glazing restoration works at the famous Elephant House following extensive fire damage.

Our team carefully carried out the following works:
✅ Removed the blown-out shopfront glazing to both units
✅ Manufactured and installed three bespoke timber fanlight frames
✅ Supplied and installed new 8.8mm laminated safety glass throughout
✅ All glazing traditionally installed in putty, maintaining strength, authenticity, and the character of the building

🔧 Specialist Glazing Replacement Completed 🔧

We recently carried out the removal of a damaged structural double glazed unit and the installation of a brand-new replacement at Buccleuch Place Lane, Edinburgh, for The University of Edinburgh.

The new unit was custom manufactured to precisely match the original specification, featuring a 10.8mm acoustic laminated inner pane and an 8.8mm laminated Clima Guard A+ 1.1 outer pane, complete with a 20mm warm-edge black spacer bar and argon gas fill to improve both thermal and acoustic performance.

Measuring an impressive 2.8m x 980mm, this was no small task. The unit was carefully carried up the stairwell by hand, then passed through its own opening while rotated on the scaffold, before being expertly positioned and installed.

A challenging lift, precise handling, and a high-spec finish — another project successfully completed for a valued institutional client in the heart of Edinburgh. 💪🪟

🔙 Throwback to a Specialist Reglazing Project | University of Edinburgh – King’s Buildings

Looking back at this challenging reglazing job our team carried out at the King’s Buildings campus. Following an emergency call-out, we returned to complete the full replacement of the curved roof pane on the revolving door — a project that demanded precision from start to finish.

We installed a 255kg, 28.8mm toughened laminated glass panel, manufactured to perfectly match the original curvature and template. This high-performance laminated glass offered enhanced strength, clarity, and durability, far surpassing standard toughened glazing.

To carry out the works, our team dismantled the outer sliding door track and centre spindle, then used a GML 800 glass lifting machine to safely manoeuvre the heavy curved panel into place on the revolving door’s substructure. All mechanical fixings were reinstated, the sliding track refitted, and the glass door realigned for smooth operation.

We finished by sealing the perimeter with clear silicone to ensure full weatherproofing and prevent water ingress — a crucial final step in a project like this.

Another standout reglazing project delivered with care and craftsmanship by the Southside team.
