I was looking for inspiration & found some.
Meet Amma Sarah, a crude little sketch in my notebook.
Amma, meaning Mother Sarah.
She was an Egyptian desert mother, born into wealthy Christian family, she gave everything up to live a life in the desert seeking purity & total union with God.
She was well read & an educated woman who chose to live alone in prayer, attending to the needs of the nearby communities.
She spent some time serving as a spiritual elder to a monastic community & eventually lived out her last 7 of 80 years, in a cave on the banks of the river Nile.
Many sayings are attributed to her. These sayings were spoken in order to elicit a response from the spiritual seeker.
Her simple prayer "O God, give me strength", challenges us to stand firm in our struggles & not run away from them, but meet them head on with God’s help.
Her desire to "put one foot to ascend the ladder, & [I] place death before my eyes before going up", is a mindful reminder to live each day to its fullest, the ladder being a metaphor for seeking spiritual maturity.
Inspiring to me the most, was her bold, yet humble, ability to face male mockery from the "brothers" who often visited her, seeking to "humiliate this old woman".
Responding with "According to nature I am a woman, but not according to my thoughts", & " It is I who am a man, you who are women".
Boldly claiming her integrity to be viewed in the cultural masculine of her time, which was to be considered "rationale, godlike, angelic, otherworldly", she reminds us to let go of our concern of reputation & what people think of us.
She further challenges us in our arrogance of thinking we are better than others because of gender, education, religion, social statuses or anything that challenges our pursute of spiritual maturity.
In her book, Laura Swan, poses a question for the reader to consider...
"Are we aware of ways we might consider someone else 'lesser' & assume a position of superiority? Of elitism? Will we allow the Holy Spirit to expose our bigotries and blindness?"
A challenge for us all, I think 🤔
