Every room faces a different way, and the light changes the undertone.

In today’s reel I’m sharing the whites I’d choose for north, east, south and west facing rooms, from soft warm whites for cooler north light to crisp, clean whites for bright south-facing rooms.

That neutral you love in someone else’s home might look completely different in yours.

The missing piece? The light.

In this episode of my painting by direction series, I’m sharing my Farrow & Ball neutral picks for north, east, south and west facing rooms, and why the undertones matter.

Cool north-facing light can make a pale neutral feel colder, while warm south-facing light gives you more room to play. For east and west facing rooms, think about the time of day you use the space most.

Always test samples in your own room, in daylight and with the lights on, before committing.

Controversial opinion: feature walls aren’t dead, they just need a purpose. Don’t just paint a wall and call it a day. Make it your TV wall, your fireplace wall or your headboard wall, then add art and texture so it works harder

Paint a big A3 square onto lining paper or white card instead, then move it around the room. Check it in the morning, at midday and with the lamps on at night.
The old wall colour changes how the new one looks, and the evening light changes everything. If you still love it after a full day, order the tin!
