**Why we say we’re Surrey-based.**

I’ve always liked being close to the projects we’re working on.

Being able to pop into site, meet our clients at home, talk something through with the joiner or check a detail with the electrician. Sometimes it’s a planned meeting and sometimes it’s just a case of getting in the car because something is much easier to sort out when you’re actually standing in the room.

These two photos are a good example.

There were a lot of conversations, decisions and site visits between the first photo and the second.

We have a brilliant team of trades around us, most of whom are locally based and many we’ve worked with for years. We trust them to do what they do, but that doesn’t mean we hand over the drawings and disappear.

We’re still there.

We work from concept right through to completion and, for me, that means being around while the project is actually being built. It means our clients aren’t left in the middle trying to answer questions from the joiner, electrician or decorator themselves.

It’s also one of the reasons I value working locally. When you’re working in someone’s home for months, you get to know each other. You meet families, sit around kitchen tables and make a lot of decisions together.

So when we say we’re Surrey-based, there’s a reason most of our work is here and in the surrounding counties.

It means we can be there when we’re needed.

And for us, that’s an important part of taking a project from concept to completion.

I love this photo of my son in Namibia.

He was just running ahead of us as the sun was going down. Nothing in his way and only the sun to catch.

Namibia gave us space to breathe as a family. We drove for hours with hardly another car on the road and, for a lot of the time, there was pretty much no Wi-Fi, so our phones were useless too. Now that was a feeling of freedom I didn’t take for granted.

We talked and laughed. We got tired and grumpy when things didn’t go to plan, but when you’re a team of four you can’t hold a grudge for too long. You need to keep your teammates on side.

We were just together. All the time. With no distractions.

Since coming home I’ve found it surprisingly difficult to answer people when they ask what Namibia was like. There isn’t one thing I can tell them that really explains it. I just know how I felt when I was there.

I’ve been writing quite a lot since we came home. About Namibia, about home and about the things that matter to me in the work we do.

And somewhere in amongst all of that, I realised I’d never really written about the three words that have sat at the heart of my business for years.

Some things can’t be described. They need to be felt.

We’re very fortunate to be able to take a break each year as a family. To slow down, reconnect and remember that we’re a team.

This year, it was Namibia.

I can’t quite describe it, but I can still feel it.

That’s one hell of a holiday.

A design studio was always a bit of a pipe dream.

For years I thought of it as something I’d love to have one day. But as the business grew, I realised it was becoming more than that.

I wanted our clients to have somewhere they could come and actually feel what we mean when we talk about Love How You Live.

I started this business because I love making people’s lives better through their homes. I built Brass House Studio because I knew this was a way for people to understand what we do differently. To spend time with us, see how we work and feel confident that we understand not just how they want their home to look, but how they want to live in it.

It’s where we work, where we meet clients and where we host our Designer for a Day sessions. But over time, it’s become much more than that.

Past clients pop in for a cuppa. We host lunches and drinks here. Friends drop by. And sometimes I just waft around by myself, mulling over an idea in my head before I work out how to bring it to life.

I think that’s what I love most about it.

It’s very much my space, but I love sharing it with other people.

And I couldn’t write about the studio without saying thank you to everyone who helped me create it. From the people who helped build it and bring all of my ideas to life, to those who encouraged me to actually go for it in the first place. There are a lot of people who played a part in making a pipe dream a reality, and I’ll always be incredibly grateful for that.

Because when someone walks through the door, I hope they understand a little more about us, how we think about homes and what I truly mean when I say…

It started more than ten years ago with a simple ethos: Love How You Live.

Since then, our team has grown, clients have stayed with us, and we've had the privilege of creating many, many beautiful homes.

I honestly have no idea where those ten years have gone, but I do know how much I've loved building this business and getting to work with all the brilliant people I've met along the way.

To our clients, suppliers, trades, friends and everyone who has supported us over the years, thank you. Your support has meant more than you'll ever know.

More than ten years on, the belief I had at the beginning is stronger than ever. Love How You Live still sits at the heart of everything we do.

I'm really excited about what comes next, the homes we'll create and, most importantly, the people we'll get to create them for.

One of the phrases I hear surprisingly often is...
"That's the room we keep for best."
Maybe it's the dining room.
Maybe it's the lounge.
Maybe it's the sofa nobody is really allowed to sit on.
And every time I hear it, I find myself asking the same question.
Who is this room actually for?
Of course we all want our homes to feel welcoming when friends and family come over.
But those people visit for a handful of evenings each year.
You live there every single day.
That's why we've come to believe the best homes are designed for ordinary Tuesdays before they are designed for Saturday nights.
For breakfast before work.
For homework around the dining table.
For curling up on the sofa after a long day.
Get everyday life right, and entertaining usually takes care of itself.
A home shouldn't spend most of its life waiting for a special occasion.
It should be enjoyed every single day by the people who call it home.

The bones were tired. That's really the best way to describe where the Esher Listed Cottage started.

All the Grade II character was there, the kind most homes would love to have, but tired isn't the same as broken. There was nothing to fix, exactly. There was just a house that had stopped feeling like somewhere you wanted to be at the end of the day.

So the brief wasn't really about restoration in the traditional sense. It was about making that character feel lighter, calmer, and easier to live in every single day, without losing a single thing that made the cottage special in the first place.

We think a lot about the moment someone walks through their own front door for the first time. Not the reveal, not the photograph. Just the moment their shoulders drop, usually without them even noticing it happening.

That's what we were designing for here.

One question we often ask clients surprises them.
"Tell me about the worst version of your day."
Not your best day.
The day everything has gone slightly wrong.
You're late home.
You've still got work on your mind.
The children need something from you the moment you walk through the door.
Because I don't think that's a strange place to start a design conversation.
I think it's the most important one.
A home can't change the day you've had.
But it can change what happens next.
That's why we think about things like somewhere obvious to leave your keys, enough light the moment you step inside, and a hallway that welcomes you home instead of adding one more thing to deal with.
None of those decisions are particularly glamorous.
Most people will never notice them.
They'll never appear in a finished photograph.
But together, they make the difference between a house that asks more of you.....and one that quietly gives something back.
For me, that's what great design is really about.
Walking through your own front door.....and feeling your shoulders drop.

One of the things I find most fascinating about interior design has very little to do with colours, fabrics or furniture.
It's layout.
Over the years, I've watched two homes with almost identical floor plans become two completely different places to live because of just a handful of decisions.
Which way the kitchen island faces.
Where a staircase lands.
Whether someone cooking is part of the conversation or standing with their back to it.
They're such small decisions on a drawing.
But they quietly shape everyday life for years afterwards.
I often say we're not just designing rooms.
We're designing the way people move through them, connect with one another and experience home every day.
One project that has always stayed with me involved turning a staircase so it arrived in the kitchen instead of a hallway.
Nothing about the family's routine changed.
But somehow everything felt different.
The evenings became more connected because everyone naturally passed through the heart of the home instead of disappearing upstairs unnoticed.
That's the part of design I love most.
The part that no one photographs.
But the part families feel every single day.
