Here is a sketch i developed from my plein air studies at Averton Gifford.
I made this lovely bright green which i call"Fresh", using charcoal gouache, french yellow earth,India blue, which is a lot cooler than ultramarine, and a dash of persan yellow gouache. And the soft pink colour is westonfields and a touch of charcoal gouache
pigments

So I am doing an interim post as certain people have alerted me to the fact that all the posts I have done (the last 2) haven’t been linked to Instagram! So hopefully this will reach the wider world intact!
Did a walk from Averton Gifford to Bantham, above the estuary on high ground. Perfect day and the tide was way low and the colours along the river were these beautiful muted umber and silver-greens .when I got home I tried to re-create those colours and came up with a gorgeous devon red mud mixed with a charcoal black and white clay to get that pink-grey-ochre colour of the sand and an interesting mix of clay, charcoal black , india blue and a synthetic yellow gouache to create a dusty pale green. Here are a few scribblings and experiments.

A fun day was had at the end of last month at Salcombe Arts Club! I Ran a Natural Pigment course for a very keen group of artists. We made watercolours, gouache and Glair, made from egg whites beaten stiffly and let sit for 10 minutes. Underneath the egg white will appear a clear watery substance which can be used as a binder and a fixative for unstable media like charcoal. I have successfully fixed some life drawings that I liked by monoprinting the glair on to the picture and they now won’t smudge!
The breaking news this week is that the famous postern yellow ochre is no longer, as the forest where it was, on a massive tree root has been cleared. Upended Tree roots usually provide very pure uncontaminated colour. Here is a pic of a tree on the sharpham path. It’s not yellow but produces a beautiful clear golden brown, which comes into its own when mixed with whites

Here we are in March - and it is still raining! In desperation on a very tempestuous day, I concluded the only way I will ever get outside drawing again is to invest in better wet weather gear-and just get wet!
So off I traipsed to Broardsands-and yes it was pelting down, and the wind was blowing a hooley, but the raw energy of the crashing sea was so wonderfully uplifting!

So after deliberating and suddenly seeing this painting again for the first time in days (I turned it to the wall) I definitely didn’t like those collage bits and they had to go!
I considered the prospect of adding a large circle in the bottom left -(i had been out walking and drawing at an ancient well near Bishopsteignton, so it was on my mind) but those collage bits were still annoying and distracting, so they have been whited out. But I do like the big circle! And I scratched quite deeply into the white area and added a glaze to break the white at the top. Probably should leave it now for a while .

Decided that the big black marks were too loud-want some quieter space, so I introduced these thinner burnt sienna collage pieces.
Here are some close ups of the piece so far.
This has been an interesting experiment making my process public-I was wondering what would happen- does having an audience alter the sorts of risks and mistakes I make because l am worried about reaction? Am I likely to be more outcome focused? Probably!

Thought the quiet space to the left hand side needed a BIG mark. So, I got printing! Had a play around with a few ideas

More big painting progress-after doing the leaves and laying down tons of white everywhere, it was time to introduce some colour. I found some soft pastels-from a long time ago, back in the day when I used to do realistic still life in pastel ( I am talking 40 years ago!) and I thought-why not scrumble these gorgeous colours in with my clay paint-works a treat and great for gradations .i felt it needed some structure at this point so I laid in my horizontal stripes with masking tape, threw some watercolour wash over it then scrubbed it back -nice effect. So tomorrow is another day. Let’s see what happens! oh, and i monprinted a fern-i might obliterate it yet!
