My favourite way to clear the wheel 🫠 On the bright side, it’s giving Akiko Hirai. Lesson of the day: wire off slowly.

Centred lump to big bowl: 12lbs (5.4kg) of clay in 6 minutes, sped up to 2x here.

At this weight the clay is always looking for a way to fail. Go wide too early and the floor sags while the walls slump. The trick is to pull it tall first, like a flower pot. That gets the walls even and strong. Only then do you open it out into the bowl shape. 🥣

Potters, how long does a 12lb bowl take you? And do you pull tall first, or go straight for the width? 👇

That’s NEOS wrapped for another year. Nine days of open doors, clay on the wheel and some brilliant conversations about pots, glazes and everything in between.

Thank you to every single person who made the trip out to Marcassie Farm, whether you were a first-time visitor, a returning face or just passing through on your NEOS trail. Your curiosity and kind words mean a great deal.

A big thank you too to our neighbours at Naturally Useful. It was a pleasure sharing the week with you.

The studio’s quieter now, but the kiln won’t be for long. If you missed us, classes and commissions carry on all year round, so come and see us anytime.

Day one of NEOS done. The wheel was spinning and the studio had a proper flow of visitors through the door.

A real honour to be the first stop on a few people’s NEOS trails today. Thank you to everyone who came, asked good questions, and had a go at understanding what happens between a lump of clay and a finished pot.

We’re at Marcassie Farm, right next door to Naturally Useful, so you can make an afternoon of it and see both in one visit.

Open again for the next 8 days. Come and say hello.

I just love it all 😆 next on the to do list are French butter bells !
