The pyrographic decorations worked by hand on this small wooden picture frame are inspired by a Hebrew illuminated manuscript known today as the Duke of Sussex Pentateuch. Originating in medieval Ashkenaz, the manuscript contains the five books (the literal meaning of "Pentateuch") of the Torah as well as excerpts from the Nevi'im and Ketuvim. The illustrations are exquisite: complex architectural motifs, animals and plants and people and heraldic symbolism, and even Hebrew micrography decorating the text.

Half Moon Workshop has been working on a series of designs based on the Duke of Sussex Pentateuch illustrations; this is only one of many. Others include a painting, a matching hand-painted mezuzah case, and (still a work in progress) a mezuzah case with pyrography to match the frame below.

Half Moon Workshop is moving to Etsy!
The URL www.halfmoonworkshop.com will now redirect to https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/HalfMoonWorkshop, though you can still access the old website at https://halfmoonworkshop.myshopify.com/ (where the majority of our stock is still listed) while we complete this transition.

It will be sad to say goodbye to the original website once the move is completed, but this is a change for the best. Shopify has made customer service more difficult for us over the years by failing to pass along essential notifications. We hope Etsy will be more consistent with this, but also look forward to showing up in more search results when people look for artistic niches, like Half Moon Workshop's fusion of Judaica and Celtic knotwork.

This new mezuzah case matches the painting so well, it's practically camouflaged! Both are inspired by the illustrations in a medieval manuscript now called the Duke of Sussex Pentateuch. This illuminated manuscript originated in an Ashkenazi community circa 1300 CE and contains the five books of the Torah ("Pentateuch" means five books) as well as five from the Nevi'im and Ketuvim.

The title page of each book is decorated with colourful illustrations, featuring architectural and heraldic motifs, as well as creative depictions of flora and fauna. Our newest stock includes a number of items inspired by these stunning designs. Some, like the painting and mezuzah case pictured here, are in colour; others are plain pyrography on wood. All of them are lovingly handcrafted at Half Moon Workshop.
