EGG lighting

When Scotstoun Stadium was being prepared as an athletics venue for Glasgow 2026, the floodlighting had to be right first time: broadcast, athletes and spectators all depended on it.

EGG Lighting delivered the electrical work for Glasgow Life. The full case study, covering what was required, what was delivered and how, is on our website:

How EGG Lighting replaced 96 floodlight heads across four 25m masts at Scotstoun Stadium for Glasgow Life, working inside a live track replacement, ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

An asset register lets you know your business or organisation has 5,000 light fittings.

That's great, but then what?

5,000 fittings shouldn’t mean 5,000 separate decisions.

When you group similar fittings by model, purpose and condition, the estate becomes a smaller set of meaningful choices:

Retain. Maintain. Investigate. Upgrade. Replace.

When you don't have this decision-making layer, it's easy to see why "replace everything" is the simple answer.

Simple isn't always sensible, not when you have a budget to manage.

Every fitting needs an outcome. Not every fitting needs intervention.

The true value of asset data doesn't lie in what or how much you collect. It lies in what it helps you decide.

We surveyed 621 light fittings for a Scottish housing association.

Then we told them 140 of those positions shouldn't be ours.

That recommendation removed the most profitable part of our own scope. It is also the only reason the rest of the report was worth reading.

A lighting upgrade is usually priced from a walk-round and a fitting count. Nobody quoting a replacement has much reason to find out what is worth keeping — so we found out first, then bid against the market on the scope our own survey had written.

Nine pages on what a survey records, where the line sits between keeping a fitting and replacing it, and what happened next.

If you are holding quotes for a lighting upgrade right now — does any of them tell you what is worth keeping?

Nobody replaces lighting because it's the right decision.

They replace it because nobody told them there was another option.

Replace it? Maybe.

But first, know what you've got.

Every engagement we have starts with a Lighting Decision Audit because good decisions come from good data—not assumptions.

Before a single fitting comes off the wall, we help customers understand:

✓ What they have
✓ What it's worth
✓ Whether replacement or remanufacture delivers the better outcome

It all starts with the audit.

In 2017, a French consumer group filed a complaint against Epson for planned obsolescence — blocking printing before cartridges were empty, artificially shortening the lifespan of ink pads, forcing consumers to replace products before they needed to.

Nine years later, Epson was summoned to criminal court. The first case of its kind in the world, starting Thursday 2nd July 2026.

Our CEO Brian O'Reilly wrote about exactly this problem in 2018 — for Circular Glasgow, before circular economy thinking had reached most boardrooms. His argument was simple: planned obsolescence isn't inherently wrong. The failure is the absence of any plan for what happens to a product once it's deemed obsolete.

Printers and luminaires aren't the same product. But the structural problem is instantly familiar — manufacturer incentives that favour replacement, proprietary components that resist repair, and procurement cycles that assume disposal is the only option.

EGG Lighting was built on a different assumption. Assess first. Understand what you own, know what it's worth, and what the right intervention is — before anything gets replaced.

Epson's customers had ink left. Some of your lights have life left too. We help you find out.

In a 24/7 working environment, being "on" all the time isn't an optimal outcome.

On when required. Off when not. Better financially, sustainably, and for the people working in the space.

Daylight harvesting and occupancy sensing were central to a significant project we completed last year. A 24/7 operation that couldn't shut down for an upgrade — and with our team, it didn't have to.

The best outcomes we've delivered all started the same way. Not with a product recommendation. With an audit.

The project that saved over £1 million in energy bills across a property portfolio.

The one that reduced energy usage by more than 80%.

The one that avoided carbon while actually increasing lux levels.

Every one began with knowing what was already there.

Most lighting conversations start with: what should we replace this with?

We think that's the wrong first question.

The right question is: does this actually need replacing at all?

A significant proportion of commercial lighting stock that gets ripped out and sent to landfill could be remanufactured to full working standard — cutting capital cost, cutting embodied carbon, and extending asset life by years.

We’re continually working around that question. It turns out, for a lot of estates, the answer changes everything.

EGG Lighting. Remanufactured to BS 8887-221:2024 — because extending asset life only matters if you can trust the result.

A police building in Wales just spent £555,000 replacing a lighting system.

The system was only 15 years old.

The reason? Parts unavailable. Fittings obsolete. No option but full replacement.

The panel chairman called the cost "strikingly large." The architects described the system as "hard to maintain."

This is what happens when lighting is treated as a one-time capital purchase rather than a managed asset.

Facilities managers across the public sector inherit systems with no viable maintenance path — then face replacement bills that were entirely avoidable.

Remanufacturing changes the equation. Rather than replacing entire systems, components are restored and fittings returned to service. Organisations typically achieve the same performance outcome at 40–60% of full replacement cost.

The Llangunnor contract is awarded. The work will go ahead.

But there are 43 police stations in Dyfed-Powys alone. And thousands of similar buildings across the UK public sector sitting on the same ticking clock. 🕰️

The question isn't whether ageing lighting will fail. It's whether you have a plan before it does.

If you manage a public sector estate and want to understand what proactive lighting lifecycle management looks like in practice, we'd be glad to talk.
