In an open-plan space, very little is viewed on its own.

When planning a kitchen, it’s worth considering how it shapes the wider living space as well as how it supports the way you cook.

That becomes especially noticeable in an open-plan room, where the kitchen is seen from several different places. What feels balanced from the dining table can look quite different from the sofa.

That is where the individual choices start to matter together. The materials and textures you choose, the shape and finish of the island and how much cabinetry is in view, all contribute to the overall picture.

Sometimes it helps to step back and consider how all of those choices relate to one another and the kind of space they create together.

One of the hardest parts of choosing materials can be knowing when to stop.

Every material changes the way the others are perceived. Add another colour, texture or finish and the balance of the room changes with it. Our role is to explore the possibilities, whilst recognising when everything begins to feel right.

Sometimes that means embracing colour. Sometimes it means letting the warmth of timber do the work. Sometimes it means leaving an idea behind altogether.

We believe the best spaces come from recognising when the room already has everything it needs.

Not simply because of the colours or finishes they come in, but because of what they allow a space to become.

A place for reminders before heading out the door. A shopping list. A favourite photograph. A child’s drawing that’s too good to take down.

Sometimes the most thoughtful materials shape not only how a space looks, but how it is used.

Before a kitchen takes shape, we’re often surrounded by samples.

We spend time looking at how they respond to the light. Pairing colour with timber. Exploring the relationships between textures and materials, because something that feels right in isolation can look very different once it sits beside the other finishes in the room.

That’s why these early conversations around materials matter. They help us understand what each family is drawn to, explore possibilities together and shape a palette that feels right for their home.

Long before the first cabinet is drawn, we’re already thinking about how the room can support the everyday moments that will unfold within it.

Walk into almost any home and you’ll learn something about the people who live there before a single word is spoken.

What timber brings to a kitchen.
