Two faced American anyone? No, not that one in the White House, this little treasure in the workshop for its once every twenty years overhaul. The tidy Ansonia dial is what you see but it’s a repainted version of the original Madras dial on the rear. From Connecticut to Madras to Gloucestershire, this American has had plenty of time to rack up those air miles.

Clocks have personalities but they aren’t people. They don’t need preventative maintenance, they will tell you when they are unhappy.
Unlike people.
They don’t need checking over regularly.
Unlike people.
And they can be restored, repaired and made whole again.
Unlike people.
Your clock will never fake being okay but if it isn’t broken don’t fix it. It will tell you when it needs help, one way or another, with some out of character behaviour.
Just like people.

When is the wrong time a good thing?
With 30+ clocks in for restoration at any given time, and a dozen of those longcases, sometimes you’ll want a clock that is settling into one of its three testing phases to stand out over the others. It’s called testing for a reason! How to best do that so you can keep an ear on its behaviour whilst you’re busy at the bench? Simple. Set it exactly four hours out compared to the rest. Every hour at the hour it will stand out and report in to you. Sometimes wrong can be right.

Most longcase count-wheel strike clocks have a lever that falls into a slot to shut down the striking mechanism. This longcase clock in for restoration is uncommon, relatively, by having ‘spikes’ that push a lever up to stop the strike as the great wheel rotates.

Adjusting timekeeping with a little French flair - that little (circled photo 1) square found at the top of many French clock dials, when turned is responsible for raising or lowering the block (circled photo 2) that the suspension sprung passes through. The more spring that appears below the block the longer the pendulum overall so the slower the clock will run. And vice versa. There’s no wiggle room with this set-up, time to alter the pendulum length at the ‘bob’ end and return this block to a more neutral position.

A thirty hour longcase clock has had this incorrect wheel added to the train just to make the movement seem complete - the needlessly extended arbor is a giveaway. New wheel being cut this week

For those who wonder how sometimes the history of railway clocks that I have for sale can be so extensive, there are original records for most of the railway clocks and lots of information is recorded. The style of the clock and the dial size, the supplier, service records, year of purchase, cost of service contract and original location are all nuggets of information that can be traced. Below is just one page of hundreds relating to LNER railways and its derivative companies.

An advert from 134 years ago from a retailer, one of whose high quality clocks I have for sale, and it shows how time changes language, time changes prices, and time has the final word. Rest easy Mr Hicks, your great work lives on.
