Picture 1 shows an image of a room, plyboarded over floorboards in preparation for an LVT floor.
(Luxury Vinyl Tile - Karndean for example).
It is clear to see from the image that the floorboards beneath the ply are very warped and uneven, thus showing through the plyboard.

Picture 2 shows how a cheaper flooring firm might finish their floor prep, ready for the LVT to be installed.
This is what we call "a feather finish". A fast setting smoothing application to eradicate dips and uneven areas in floors.
Not a finish that, we as a firm would ever offer without a signed consent form from the customer that eliminates us from any call backs... Because call backs are exactly what we would recieve.

Picture 3 shows a perfectly levelled floor over the top of both the plyboard and the feather finish, using a high grade flexible screed with self levelling properties and a built in smoothing compound to guarantee a perfectly workable floor prep for all glue down flooring installation.

LVT flooring has a full coverage of adhesive which means the finish product will naturally take shape to the floor beneath it.
Why am I telling you this, I hear you ask.
I'm raising this with frustration as a highly skilled flooring installer, working for a reputable company that are forever competing against firms that offer pictures 1 and 2 as acceptable finishes for LVT flooring.
Undercutting us on price and deliberately deceiving customers by fabricating lies about materials needed for the job in hand.
We had a customer arrive at our showroom this week after being quoted by 2 other firms (aswell as us) both of which incorrectly told them that plyboard is for wood areas and levelling compounds are for concrete areas.
The customer was curious as to why we had quoted to screed over the plyboard because they were led to believe that screed was only for concrete floors.

YOUR FINISHED FLOOR WILL LOOK HIDEOUS!

Please PLEASE stop accepting jobs based on price alone. You WILL end up paying twice!

So that's another local flooring firm that has had a massive floor failure costing his business thousands of pounds to rectify it...

Below are 2 images of a floor we were working on yesterday.
The darker section is the concrete, pumped in by the builders, ready for the flooring installation process to begin.
Looks like any standard concrete floor right?
Wrong!
Many building contractors are using Anhydrate screeds these days, due to the cost and time efficiency of the product.
But as a flooring installer, it's important to know your subfloor.
These floors can take weeks or even months to dry out properly, so moisture tests are a necessity.
They also settle with a skin of latency on the surface which must be sanded back before any applications are made... and THIS is where other firms (mentioning no names) have gone wrong.
Using their normal primers and levelling compounds over the top of an Anhydrate floor without prior testing and latency removal is a 100% floor failure.

The lighter coloured section of the floor is how the concrete should look once sanded back.

Are you being quoted correctly??
Are you choosing a flooring firm solely based on price alone?

These are HUGE and very expensive mistakes to make. Please ask the right questions and ensure the correct floor prep is offered.

And that's a rap for Solent Flooring.
Finishing on a high, installing various floors in the most beautiful home.

Our senior fitter, Paul has had the pleasure of installing floors for this family for over 10 years, and after much nagging and gentle arm twisting he was finally able to encourage Myles and Emma to upgrade their hallway to the Heritage range by Karndean.

A home already filled with so much love and joy made Paul's last job of the year incredibly enjoyable.
Of course the constant aroma of baking, cooking and CHEAP coffee definitely helped. 😋

As much as this post is an advert for what we offer as a company. It is also an opportunity to give thanks to such a loyal customer, for sticking by us over the years and always choosing excellence over cost.

Myles and Emma - It has been a pleasure, as it always is. Perhaps now I can convince you to extend another wing to your home so we can continue to supply you with flooring.

When the builders installed the byfolding doors on this extension, they'd misjudged the height requirements for the flooring.

With no room for screeding at one end, and a gradient slope 3 times lower at the other, we knew we'd have our work cut out for us.

We sent a team of fitters in to grind the floor back, to allow room for the screed, and then the installation team worked their magic.

The reflections say it all. Perfectly flat and ready for their brand new Karndean flooring.

There really is an art to levelling floors, and the team at Solent Flooring have absolutely mastered it.
