Heritage Threads

Standing here on this ridge, I’m on what remains of a large Bronze Age Burial Cairn. There are a few of them along this edge but this one is the biggest. There were more behind me in the trees but they were bulldozed in the 50's for tree planting.

In the distance, Roseberry Topping sits against the skyline, its shape has changed since the Bronze Age, Victorian mining cause part of the hill to colapse.

But the veiw is still very special and I think these people must have thought so too.

This place isn't just about the scenery, its history!

One Tree One Year - February

February arrives quickly this year.

And so did low cloud, continual rain and damp muddy paths.

The one tree stands alone in the middle of its field just as it did last month but this time its almost lost in the mist.

Not much sign of any green leave just yet!

A cold and wet week!
A scattering of snow on the high ground made a couple of picturesque shots.
Work on the New Purple Route is progessing - sadly they are funnelling the excess water into the old animal creep - an ignominious fate for a lovely feature of the old railway line. I do wonder why they aren't using the stone build land drain on the other side of the path?
There’s water, water everywhere!
Well that's it for this week!

Heritage Threads

This stone block wall wasn't always a car park.
Before the woodland walks, visitor centre, and picnic tables, this area was the coal wagon depot for the steam trains.
The car park is normally busy but with the cafe closed for improvements and weather really bad it was completely empty and I was able to photograph it without the usual cars blocking the view.
I doubt the people parking their cars ever stop to wonder why this area is different from the rest of the car park!

Hidden Details 🌿
Here is a knot in a tree where an old branch once grew.
I like the way it looks - I think its watching me!
The moss and lichen have grown into the folds of the bark and turned this scar into a little living landscape.

Trees are great at telling us about their lifes, its litterally written into the bark for all to see, even the damaged parts.
If you look closely, the woodland is full of these small histories - you just need to stop and look!

Heritage Threads 🌿

This week’s heritage isn’t old.

It’s being laid right now.

The new section of the Purple Route (accessibility trial) now curves gently through the trees, with a small branch leading off towards the purposed new outdoor shelter.
Decision made now about how people will move through this space are making the heritage of tomorrow.

In time, this will look like it has always been here. The ground will settle, the edges will soften, and the path will simply become part of the woodland.

Heritage doesn’t only come from what we inherit. Sometimes it begins with what we choose to put in place.

Hidden Details

This gate post sits in the middle of an ordinary housing estate and I have walked past it many times but this time I noticed its surface has become home to something special, a little miniature moss world complete with tiny stems and a soft green cushions.

Early morning, slowly lifting mist.
Highcliffe in the distance, as the fqrm fields start to appear.
Beautiful in its own way.

The Weekly Wrap Up
A day late, I know but its been a busy week. I have finished building the Heritage Group's website - that was not fun! Roxy's has had us trailing around the, very muddy, wood on her daily patrols. was listening to the whispers up on Bousdale Hill and the work for the new accessibility trail ( Purple Route) is progressing quickly down on the Branchwalk Way.
It's cold, wet and muddy but things are still happening!
