Are they really pieces of the Moon and Mars?

Yes, and there’s some fascinating science behind how we know.

Lunar and Martian meteorites begin when a huge impact strikes the surface of the Moon or Mars with enough force to blast rock into space. A tiny fraction of that material eventually crosses Earth’s path, survives the journey through our atmosphere and is later discovered on the ground.

Scientists then analyse the mineralogy, chemistry and isotopic composition of the material. Lunar meteorites can be compared with samples returned from the Moon, while Martian meteorites have their own distinctive chemical signatures, in some cases even preserving gases that match the Martian atmosphere.

And they are incredibly rare.

Only a tiny fraction of known meteorites have been confirmed as coming from the Moon or Mars, and many recognised specimens are actually fragments of the same original meteorite rather than completely separate falls.

That rarity is why genuine lunar and Martian material is usually sold in very small pieces. These specimens are tiny fragments taken from larger classified meteorites, but they are still exactly what they claim to be.

So, are they really from the Moon and Mars? Yes,they genuinely are.

Calcite might be one of the most overlooked minerals.

It’s incredibly common, which perhaps makes it easy to dismiss, but specimens like this show just how interesting it can be.

Starting at the matrix, you can see strong reddish colouring before the calcite develops through darker olive greens and eventually into much paler green crystals towards the top.

Pure calcite is colourless, but natural crystals can take on an enormous range of colours depending on trace elements, mineral inclusions and the chemistry of the fluids present as they grow. As those conditions change during formation, the colour can change too, sometimes even within a single specimen.

That means one piece can effectively preserve a record of the changing environment in which its crystals formed.

Common mineral. Definitely not a boring one.

So, what actually is a composite fossil?

The word composite sometimes gets used almost interchangeably with “fake”, but that isn’t really accurate.

In fossil collecting, a composite simply means that a specimen has been assembled using more than one element, rather than being preserved exactly as it was found. That might mean genuine fossils from different individuals have been brought together, missing sections have been reconstructed, or real fossils have been mounted into a new display.

These Mosasaur jaws are a perfect example. The teeth themselves are genuine Mosasaur fossils, but they weren’t discovered together in this jaw. Smaller genuine teeth have been set into a reconstructed jaw to create an interesting and affordable display.

It isn’t intended to suggest that this is a naturally preserved Mosasaur jaw, it’s simply a way of presenting real fossils in a form that people can easily appreciate.

And composites aren’t unusual. Many museum dinosaur mounts use bones from more than one individual, casts of missing bones, and reconstructed sections to create a complete skeleton where nature didn’t preserve one.

So a composite isn’t automatically a bad thing. The important part is transparency.

If something has been assembled, restored or reconstructed, it should be described as such. When that’s clear, composites can be a brilliant way to display genuine fossils that might otherwise be little more than loose fragments in a drawer.

Our seasonal collection has been proving rather popular already…

The Halloween pieces have been selling quickly, from gemstone pumpkins and ghosts to our slightly more unusual crystal spiders, but there’s still time to pick up your favourites.

And yes, it is only October, but apparently nobody told the Christmas decorations. The gemstone trees, snowmen and hanging decorations have already started finding new homes too.

Most of these are limited seasonal lines, so once a design or stone is gone, it may well be gone for the season.

A little bit about the person behind Finest Fossils…

Like most children, I was obsessed with dinosaurs and football. Once I realised I was unlikely to become either a professional footballer or, unfortunately, a dinosaur, palaeontology seemed the natural next step.

That childhood fascination became fossil and rock collecting, then a degree in Palaeontology. I actually started out working in retail, mainly ski wear and outdoor clothing, before getting the chance to sell fossils and minerals on a small scale. Thanks to some great contacts and access to unusual specimens, Finest Fossils grew much faster than I expected.

I’ve tried selling purely online, but what I really love is the interaction. Whether you’re eight or eighty, buying your first fossil or adding to a serious collection, I’ll happily talk about this stuff all day.

That’s also why the shop is the way it is. Growing up, so many amazing things were behind glass in museums. Wherever possible, I want people to actually experience natural history, pick something up, feel the weight of it, and realise you’re holding something that was part of a living creature millions of years ago.

As a dad, that matters even more. One of the most common things I hear when families walk in is “don’t touch anything!” but I want children to be curious, ask questions and get excited. My girls have grown up around the business, and seeing other children light up in the shop is still one of the best parts of the job.

We’re child friendly, pet friendly, and I’ll always do my best to accommodate anyone who needs a quieter visit too.

Away from fossils, I play darts for Buckinghamshire County and naturally, my nickname is “The Fossil Man” and I’m a lifelong motorsport fan.

So that’s me: dad, palaeontologist, retailer, darts player and frustrated F1 driver.

If you’ve never visited because you thought a fossil shop might be too serious, too expensive, or somewhere you’d be terrified to bring the kids, please don’t be.

Everyone is welcome.
