Today we are talking about
About Christopher Hall:
Iām primarily a figurative oil painter but open-minded to other media and subjects.
The name Alternative Normal that I use online, is a nod to my beautiful, autistic and learning-disabled son. In lots of ways, he doesnāt quite fit the societal mould of
ānormalityā. But heās shaped his world into a place where his alternative normal reigns..
and I love that.
The notion of an alternative normality inspires my painting. Most of the subjects lāve painted so far would be quite ordinary, mundane even, had I painted them as fully human. Iām trying always to present reality, with a twist. Sometimes this is just for fun, because an idea wouldnāt go away. Quite often, Iām also poking at some absurd, baffling or darker element of real life.
A successful painting for me isnāt just one that somebodybuys; itās one that people want to engage with. If got it right, make someone smile first and that of itself is a reward.Hopefully some will stay longer and find something more, beyond my often-flimsy humour. I love hearing different interpretations of my work, regardless of whether or not any are what Iād intended. I generally avoid explaining my paintings exactly so people can just see what they see and take what they take from them. Just to create a painting that someone wants to spend a little time with, to wonder about or relate to in some small way is what itās all about, for me.
