🧵 A little bit of my sewing history stitched into one jacket! ❤️
Well, here she is! My finished Manon cropped trench jacket, and I have to say I’m rather chuffed with this one! 🥰
I’ve used a mixture of beautiful Scottish wool fabrics I’ve collected over the years on my travels, mixing checks, herringbone and contrasting textures to create something a wee bit different.
But this jacket has brought back some lovely memories too.
Many years ago, I worked at DAKS Simpson, first as a Training Supervisor and also as a Quality Manager.
I was lucky enough to learn from some incredibly skilled people, including one gentleman who actually came out of retirement to teach me the art of sewing checked sleeves.
I wish I could remember his name, because all these years later, I’ve never forgotten what he taught me. ❤️
And yes, I’ve been matching those checks on this jacket! Once a quality manager, always a quality manager! 😂
But here’s the really special bit…
Those buttons are original DAKS buttons I’ve kept all these years from my factory days!
Who would have thought they’d eventually find their way onto a jacket I’d make for myself, in my very own sewing studio?
From learning my trade, to training others, to eventually opening Sew You Can and sharing everything I’ve learned with my lovely sewing community.
It’s funny how life comes full circle. 🥹
This is why I love sewing. It’s not just about making clothes. It’s about the skills we learn, the people who teach us and the little bits of history we carry along the way.
And now I’m looking forward to sharing some of those skills at our upcoming Manon jacket workshops at Sew You Can.
Saturday 24th October is our next workshop! 🧵
Lots of love,
Kay ❤️
