For those who don't have sheep, this is Perry our new ram showing his interest in one of our ewes. We've just put 7 of our ewes in with him and they will be with him for the next 6-8 weeks.
It feels like a bit of an act of hope - that there'll be hay available when we bring the ewes in to lamb in mid March - and commitment after the demise of Izzy. The good news is that the PM showed she did indeed have a something other than wasting disease. But one of the rest of the flock has weirdly tested positive for it. We will get her retested to double check it's true.

October is Wool Month! 🐑🧶

I can't believe we're half way our month long celebration of wool.

Thank you for choosing to make with British wool and for being part of our woolly community. 🐑

Without you I would have a shop full of yarns and fibres which are far too much for me to spin, knit or weave! I have so appreciated all the the support from you on this venture whether you're a follower, website subscribers, online customer or visit our physical wool shop. You are what makes it so worthwhile - thank you.

And if you're looking for some yarn or fibre for a new project - pop along to the studio today through to Saturday between 10 and 4. Poppy will be delighted to meet you and there's some lovely things to squish and inspire

Why provenance matters 🐑

Where did your wool come from? We think that’s a lovely question to be able to answer.

At Woolplay, we champion British wool with a story—from our own Leicester Longwools and other local flocks to yarns made by British mills that care about provenance and traceability. This Wool Month, let’s celebrate the journey from sheep to skein.

A little love for British wool ❤️

Wool Month is a reminder to pause and appreciate everything that goes into a skein: the sheep, the people who care for them, the skill of the mill and the hands that turn yarn into something loved.

Thank you for choosing to make with British wool and for being part of our woolly community. 🐑

October is Wool Month! 🐑🧶

And I'm enjoying knitting a scarf in this lovely yarn. It's from John Arbon's Seafarer sport weight range and the shade is called Lynbakr. It is subtle blend of lilac and pink. The yarn is a mix of Blue Faced Leicester, Exmoor Blueface, Romney and Devon Closewool with splash of Mulberry Silk.

We stock both the yarn and the yarn holder so pop over to the Woolplay website - woolplay.co.uk and choose your favour shade.

October is Wool Month! 🐑🧶

So why choose British Wool?

1. Naturally Sustainable - British wool is a renewable natural fibre, grown every year by sheep grazing our landscapes. They fertilise the fields they graze in and provide wonderful fleeces once a year

2. Made to Last - It's strong, resilient and durable, wool products are designed to stand the test of time. I have wool jumpers that are more than 30 years old

3. Naturally Breathable - wool helps regulate temperature and moisture, keeping you comfortable all year round.

4. Biodegradable - wool naturally breaks down without leaving harmful microplastics behind. We use discarded fleece as mulch in the garden - it's a great w**d suppressant

5. Supporting British Farmers - by choosing British wool, you’re helping support thousands of sheep farmers and rural communities across the UK.

October is Wool Month! 🐑🧶

All through October, we’ll be celebrating the sheep, farmers, flocks and makers behind the wool we love. From our own Leicester Longwools to the local flocks and British mills we work with, every skein has a story worth sharing.

Woolplay's studio is open, today, Friday and Saturday from 10 - 4 with our first cake + month on Saturday morning from 10.30am.

Here’s to cosy stitches, creative projects and knowing where your wool comes from. What are you making this month? 🍂

It's amazing what another day can bring. This was some of the ewes investigating a lick and having a bit of squabble. So smallholder life is back to normal!

Keeping our rare breed flock of sheep is usually rewarding and I love it. But there are days when it's tough and today is one of those days. We had to say good bye to Izzie one of our ewe's who has been poorly for the last couple of months and no matter what we've tried, she's deteriorated to the point when she's become very weak and was no longer eating.

Unfortunately we think she had a wasting disease which others in the flock may have too but are just not showing it yet. So we've had the vet out take blood tests of the rest of flock and hope to get the results by the end of the week. Rationally I know she will not be the only one but I'm so hoping the PM will show it was something else entirely that was just her.
