EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER at the NICHE AWARDS 2026 🏆✨🦋

Having returned back to Harrogate after an amazing weekend down in London, I’m only just starting to let it all sink in. It’s hard to put into words what I’ve experienced over the past couple of days but one thing is for sure, Niche is redefining the word ‘Luxury’ by scratching the surface of appearance and giving it a new meaning, strictly linked to what’s human, authentic and made of genuine connections.

As for myself, this award reflects what’s possible when you are absolutely yourself, follow your passion and dare to dream. But dreams are rarely achieved alone.
I’m a great believer that what and who surrounds you has a massive impact on who you become.

Two years ago, following the passing of my beautiful mum I decided to pour all my energy into creating new and valuable connections. From that, lots of collaborations with old and new small businesses were reinforced and born.
And what I’ve learned is that none of us really builds anything alone. Every project, every idea, every good day at the studio has someone else’s fingerprints on it: a supplier who went the extra mile; a fellow business owner who said “why don’t we try this together?”, a friend who simply believed in what I was doing and gave me that extra kick up the butt when I needed it.

In my work, I talk a lot about spaces that reflect the people who live in them. I’ve come to realise that a business is exactly that, and it becomes a reflection of the people you choose to surround yourself with.
So, I want to share this award with everyone who has shaped that reflection. You’ve made my world richer, braver and a lot more fun.

Here’s to many more connections, many more opportunities for future collaborations and to everything we’ll create together next.

IN LIFE, THE SILENT WORK BECOMES THE LESSON! 🦋✨💖

Last month a long chat in the studio with Brontë turned into an article published on FEMME COUNTRY MAGAZINE Ltd and it did something I didn’t expect.

It sent me straight back through the last 29 years of my life. From 1997 when I landed in the UK, started a family, and swapped one career for the one I dreamt of when I first visited London as a student in 1992.
Back then I fell in love with a company I could only dream of working for at some point in my life: Laura Ashley.
Fast forward to 2007, and that was my first job as an interior designer. My journey as Elisa Interiors didn’t start until 2010, and 6 years later I finally built my own studio. My dream of turning creativity into rooms that hold people’s everyday lives became my day-to-day life.

But reading the article, I realised the reflection wasn’t about business. It was very much personal.

I used to think the sacrifices were for me and the business. But the article made me look at my girls (28 and 26, both living in Madrid now) and realise that every struggle, every fall, every hard-won lesson wasn’t just shaping me. From a 25-year-old girl in a small village outside Rome, to a woman building something new in a country that wasn’t mine, every version of me they witnessed became a version they could reach for too.

And that took me all the way back to my own childhood, back to the two women who shaped my life:
✨my grandmother and mother. ✨
Their daily ‘rituals’ (time spent in the kitchen cooking, taking care of the house and the people they loved, and always leaving the house immaculately dressed and groomed) taught me everything, without a word being spoken. I just watched. Every day. Quietly.

So here’s the lesson: the part we don’t see, the struggle, the doubt, the fear, the anxiety, the part we hide from the rest of the world, that is the part with the greatest value.

Thank you, Brontë, for giving me the chance to reflect on my life and for making me part of your beautiful magazine, a genuine reflection of your vision and values. 💖

SATURDAY Celebration ☀️✨💛

There are places where creating a safe space becomes the best way to offer support, love and care to those who need it more than others.
Well that’s what Alana in West Tanfield has been relentlessly working on for sometimes and wanted to celebrate today.
Also a beautiful way to thank all the people behind the hard work gone into The Flow Foundation which has officially expanded access of the transformational services to support those navigating neurodiversity and all forms or emotional imbalance.

An afternoon of community, connection and wellbeing with yoga sessions and natural remedies readily available to buy by

Katherine’s herbal teas accompanied delicious cakes served in the garden.

An interesting talk by on healthy gut and diet.

And what better way to end a glorious day than a perfect healing sound bath by the river? Thank youmullen.heart_ofthe_matter for a blissful moment of peace right on this Lion’s Gate day 🙏🏻✨🦁

I’ve worked with Annette since 2010 (since I set up Elisa Interiors basically!) on so many projects, I genuinely lost count!

This particular collection is very special to me as, embedded in the design (please take a step back and keep an eye out for the little details in the background of the mural), you’ll find various elements referring back to various memorabilia.

1. The “prima donna”: the figure in the center of the mural is nothing else but a statue I spotted and photographed in a garden during one of my trips to Milan;

2. The “filo di perle” (aka the pearls): my grandparents’ gift for my graduation;

3. The “centrotavola”: the hemstitch centerpiece embroidered by my grandmother… one of many lovingly made by her, who used to spend entire days in front of the living room window, totally immersed in that skilled art.

But none of those things would be there, harmoniously put together, without Annette’s clever and talented eye!

The beautiful English roses from a garden in London, and the many other flowers she chose to embellish the scene, give the collection a truly bucolic and ethereal touch that takes me back not only to the past and those beautiful memories, but to a time in human history I love so much: the Renaissance.

365 TRIPS AROUND THE 🌕 whilst making the most of my girls, my family, my friends (old ones and new ones met along the way), my clients and my passion for what I do for a living.

Amongst all that, this one has to be remembered as the year of many challenges and discoveries, particularly about the subconscious mind and the impact on so many aspects of my daily life.
I simply wish I had known more a long time ago!

Determined to understand and implement, this is what I found out and what’s shaped the last 12 months of my life:

1. Your environment is programming your subconscious whether you’re paying attention or not. The people, the music, the content, the rooms, the conversations…none of it is accidental or neutral.

2. Awareness is not the same as change. Knowing your pattern and breaking it are two completely different neurological processes. Work on yourself gives you the results!

3. Confidence doesn’t come first. It comes from surviving discomfort on repeat. That’s where the growth actually happens.

4. Do something new as often as you can, even small things rewire the brain. If you can’t think of anything, just put your fave artist on and dance as nobody is watching!

5. Calm and awake is the state creation happens from. Not urgency. Not anxiety. Not desperation.

6. Your personality creates your personal reality. How you think, act and feel every day is building your future by default. Change the personality and you change the outcome.

7. My grandmother was right! fai del bene e dimenticatene’ (do good and forget about it - alias give, without expecting anything in return) and I would like to add: do it as it will come back, from different sources and different people. That’s golden rule!

8. No matter what, LOVE always wins! 🫂

🛁 BATHROOM DESIGN EDIT: ‘Wellness vs Wellbeing’.

Last month I stayed in a really gorgeous hotel in Cambridge with snazzy interiors and a super cute bathroom ( check it out in the pictures!)
However, having designed a few of them over the years and just about 27 of them in the past few months for a development I’m currently working on, I couldn’t help the fussy eye this time.

Fundamentally the choice in a bathroom falls into one of two categories, but why not try and consider them both at once?

🛁 WELLNESS and WELLBEING ✨

Here below is my checklist for anyone thinking of refurbishing a bathroom.

🛁WELLNESS (or function-led choices)

✨Thermostatic shower (for the optimised everyday wash routine)

✨Extractor fan (for your air quality, and no mould)

✨Downlight in the shower (guarantees visibility & safety)

✨Backlit mirror + vertical wall lights to guarantee you true-to-life light for grooming and makeup sessions. (This was the biggest issue in the bathroom of the hotel I stayed in. The lack of good lighting in the bathroom forced us to do our makeup in the kitchen!)

✨Demister, a mirror that actually works after a shower!

✨Shaver point and USB socket, to charge your essentials in the right rooms!

✨Underfloor heating…warmth as a baseline comfort

✨Vanity unit: the necessary storage!

🛀 WELLBEING ( or the ‘feeling-led’ choices)

✨LED in the coving to give you a soft wash of light, no harsh source…especially during your pampering sessions!

✨ Niche lighting in the shower to enhance the sense of calmness and facilitate the release mode

✨ Niche beside the bath, there to set the mood for soaking and resetting

✨ Dual fuel radiator, to guarantee warm towels and tactile comfort when stepping out of the bath or shower.

✨ Dimmable evening-mode circuit …the room shifts from “get ready” to “unwind”

The best bathrooms do both: function that works quietly in service of how the space makes you feel….even the smallest ones! 😘

WITH AN EYE TO THE FUTURE 🏡

This is something I love about interior design: rooms are never fixed forever, they grow with the family living in them.

Back in 2021, when this family bought their home, we turned the original snug/TV room into a playroom with a bespoke mezzanine. A space for the kids purely designed with fun in mind.

Fast forward to today, and that same room is getting a new purpose again: it’s becoming a bedroom with its own en-suite, tucked into the corner exactly where the mezzanine used to be.

A few things worth knowing if you’re thinking of doing the same:

✨Adding a bathroom almost always adds value to your property, especially an en-suite to a bedroom.

✨ Before anything else, check where the soil stack is. This decides what’s realistically possible and where the new bathroom can go.

✨ Repurposing a room is often more cost-effective than extending, and it makes better use of the space you already have.

✨ Think long-term: what your family needs now may not be what you need in 5 or 10 years.

I’ve done this many times over the years. One of my fave examples is a Victorian four-storey house I worked on right at the start of my career, back in 2010. We fitted a lovely bathroom on the top floor and then in 2019, as the family grew from 2 to 5 children, that same bathroom was repurposed into an extra bedroom for their eldest.

Our homes should evolve with us…..that’s Slow Design in practice, not rushing into big changes, but adapting thoughtfully as life does. 🏡❤️

A morning spent at Kettle’s Yard this weekend reminded me not only how art can be woven into everyday domestic life rather than put on a pedestal, but also how a Slow Design approach allows you to tailor a space that transcends aesthetic and leans instead towards intentional curation for wellbeing.
The house is the result of years of collecting art, objects, furniture and memorabilia. It’s no surprise, then, that walking inside you are taken on a journey where the least trend-driven (or simply more accurately, the most deeply personal!) interiors have aged so beautifully.

There are forces such as light, scale, and the passage of time through a space that no amount of pure styling can manufacture.
You either design with them… or you don’t. ❤️

Not far from being completed now, but both rooms in this cottage, I see them a bit like canvases. I keep adding another brushstroke every time I look at them… and every time I pop round to see my client!

The art of layering in interiors is what helps you create spaces which outlive trends.
I see this final part of the design process a bit like the ‘slow-food’ movement: aimed at a long-term impact.

So, how to ‘slow-design’ a space in a few steps?

✨Choose with intention, not urgency

✨Prioritise handcrafted pieces whenever possible

✨Think of the mood you want to create in relation to the time of the day the room is going to be used

✨Prioritise longevity and sustainability when selecting the most expensive pieces in a room (ie: sofas, beds, furniture) by opting for good quality materials/frames/structure.

The more a room is an authentic translation of who you are, the higher the chances you will love that room for quite some time!

Speaking of handcrafted pieces:

1. the two gorgeous fringed lampshades by designed to go with Annette’s bespoke mural totally transformed the 4m high ceiling in the bedroom.

2. Sarah’s cute selection of scattered cushions was a confirmation that… a sofa can never have enough cushions!
