Did you know that California condors have a horrible sense of smell?

This is unusual for a scavenger in search of dead prey! So, how do condors find their food? And with whom are they competing?

California condors have excellent eyesight and can soar as high as 15,000 feet in altitude. At such heights, a condor can easily spy on the behavior of other scavengers like turkey vultures, crows, ravens, and even the occasional bald eagle (Bald eagles do hunt, but they are well-known scavengers too.) Once a carcass is discovered, the much larger condor will quickly take it over from these other birds.

Being chased off a carcass by a condor isn't always bad, though... If it's a large carcass, like an elk, a seal, or a whale, the beak of a condor is one of the few natural accessories that can cut into a body first. Thus, condors make large prey more accessible to other scavengers that can't pierce the hides or blubber of recently deceased large animals, making nature's clean-up crews all the more efficient!
