With the recent cold spell the garden slowed a little. But with temperatures rising this weekend it will no doubt catch up.

Butterfly Ranunculus, Musa took me a bit by surprise. I’d never grown Butterfly Ranunculus until this year and when choosing varieties from website images it’s always a bit of a gamble. You’re never entirely sure what the true colour is until you see them in real life. I wasn’t expecting Musa to be as it is in real life - let’s face it, it’s red. Red in spring is always unexpected. There’s of course the odd red tulip but we tend to ignore/remove them. But having lived with Musa for the past couple of weeks, it’s so much more than red. Yes, it starts off being red, but as the days go by the colours evolve into shimmering tones of gold. So, from my initial nervousness, I’ve grown to love it for its uniqueness at this time of year - it’s not what we expect to find in the spring palette.
🌿
As well as Musa, we’re growing Ariadne and Eris who do happily sit amongst the spring tones. Growing these Butterfly Ranunculus has been a total revelation and they’ll now become an annual staple for our growing calendar.
🌿
Having enough space and being able to experiment and try new and different varieties in the garden is a privilege that I do not take for granted. In the 5 years that we’ve been growing flowers for cutting here at Water Lane there’s always been an element of experimentation - or some might call it ‘trial and error’ - not only what works and grows well in our garden but also what works from a cut flower perspective. As we increase our cut flower production with the tried and tested we’ll make sure that there will be space experimentation too.
🌿
The flowers in this image found their way to one of our wholesale clients in London today and will be a focal point in someone’s wedding flowers this weekend. We hope they like them as much as we do.
