Currently sourcing lighting for a project and thinking back to some of my favourite ceiling lights. I think this house has some beauties! Most of all I love the big scale lights in the kitchen. We tested these out in drawings to make sure the client knew exactly what she was getting. In a room like this one only a big light would do! My electrician wasnt happy though!

I was chatting a client this week who is about to start a house build. We were talking about what I call “The Fear” moments that can crop up in a clients minds. Typical moments include when the walls first go in (and it looks smaller than a client had in their head), when big invoices start to come in at once (sparking budgeting worries about why on earth you are doing this!) and when paint first goes on the wall (it won’t look right until all the elements are in the room). I always flag to clients when these Fear moments might crop up and provide reassurance throughout the whole project. But most importantly building a vision at the beginning of a project builds confidence and trust in the end result. It provides a safe anchor to keep referring to during those moments. We also think through all the thousands of details that need to be considered to avoid those stomach churning moments. so that expensive mistakes aren’t made. LIke when you realise the bed won’t get up the stairs!

I love period homes and after years working on them, I’ve tested many paint colours! It’s so easy to go wrong and get that horrible lurch in the stomach when the first coat goes on!
In houses with beams you need to choose paints with a brown, yellow or green undertone. This doesn’t mean choosing those actual colours! The undertone will be very subtle and barely obvious. Slide through for some of my favourites 📷

There is often a misconception that interior designers come in towards the end of a project—to “pull things together.” In reality, so much of what makes a home feel right is decided months or years before. And then involves months of careful planning and co-ordination to bring it together. In recent years I’ve become much more involved in the early stages of period renovations. Generally these projects run much more smoothly and clients are far less stressed, for a few of these reasons. 📷

There is a lot of talk in my industry right now about how we, as interior designers, describe what we do and the value we offer. Particularly as AI rapidly develops. What we offer is so much more than a tick list of services. It is also an experience. We are by our client’s side as they go through one of the most emotional parts of their lives - creating a home for their family or even downsizing as their kids leave the nest. It’s riddled with emotion and can also be one of the most stressful times of their lives. We are the buffers for so much stress, often dealing with uexpected issues without ever bothering our clients. And keeping our clients spirits up by building their confidence in the end vision. It’s difficult to articulate but such an important part of our role

I love working on heritage properties. I grew up in one, live in a listed house and specialise in period properties! I think that when you live in an old house you are the custodians for a part of its history. You are part of its evolving story which is such a privilege. They do, however, come with many challenges and you need to work with specialists who can anticipate these. Navigating listed building consent, planning restrictions and unexpected challenges during the build requires an experienced team. But I don’t know of one client that has regretted the decision once they move in. It is always worth it in the end!
